Hot and Tasty:The First Course,is a story about friendship, family, love, passion and food. It shows even though life presents the unexpected, one has the will to persevere.

Later that week on Thursday evening, Antonio’s father joined him at their dinner table. His father had just given a rousing 10-minute speech at their fundraiser which generated money for low-income housing in New York City. The Lioni real estate company owned lower income units available in his rental and condo buildings. Budget cuts now interfered with funding for reduced rentals in newer rental developments throughout the city.  Since he was an extremely successful and respected face of real estate, his presence generated a hefty sum of money from the attendees. David Lioni was all smiles, but he was in a sour mood because his son did not obtain a deal on a plot of land. Underneath the expensive wool blend suit was a ticking time bomb. He would have preferred to relax at home with a glass of brandy listening to classic jazz playing throughout his study. Instead, he had to smile and make “nice”. After they took their seats next to a few other people at the round dinner table they were immediately served their choice of dinner, chicken parmesan. Antonio thought it was succulent as he savored the crunchy breaded exterior and juicy, flavorful meat.  His taste buds sang because the tomato sauce was well seasoned.  Who the heck made this? He didn’t want to say anything, but it tasted better than his mother’s. He tried his best to hide his high approval as ate each bite. This feeling was short lived once he caught his father staring at him. He stared at his son with great distaste for his plate.

“I’m happy you’re enjoying dinner. David sarcastically responded. Which is way is the kitchen?”

Antonio swallowed his food and used his napkin to wipe off the sauce on the corner of his mouth. “I saw the waiters leave the kitchen from there” Antonio pointed to the rear of the dining room.

David took his plate and excused himself from the table. Antonio watched as his father made his way to the kitchen. He waited a moment before following him. All of his other table guests tried to ignore the fact David did not look too pleased with his dinner and tended to their plates. Antonio knew it was his fault he was not enjoying himself. Now a poor unsuspecting cook was about to experience the wrath of David Lioni. He enjoyed a few bites before leaving his seat.

The waiters ducked out of David’s way as they sped out of the busy but organized, kitchen. They knew better than to get in David’s way. He was an honored guest and key speaker. David asked the help to direct him to the head chef. The help instantly pointed behind him and scurried out of the kitchen.

David saw a black woman preparing dessert behind a counter. He approached to the other side of the counter. He was shorter than her, but he still had an intimidating aura. She was so busy plating dessert, she didn’t even realize David was standing there.

“Do you know how to make fucking chicken parm?” His voice was more intimidating than his short stature.

Sophia-the chef looked up, startled. It was David Lioni, and he was holding his dinner in front of him. She almost never received complaints, but staring into this man’s fearless eyes, she wasn’t so sure.

“Yes, I can re-” Sophia tried to retrieve the plate from David to remake the dish to his liking, but he pulled it away. It did not diffuse the situation.

“Do you know how to make chicken parm!” He yelled. All the nearby help stopped and stared at what was taking place.  Sophia quickly retracted her arm in fear.

“My damn dog can make eggs better than this shit. People are paying a shit load of money to be here for dinner that tastes like garbage.”David scolded as he bounced the plate on the counter.

Antonio walked into the kitchen to see his father standing across from -his heart dropped. It was the beautiful woman he watched every morning from his office window. She was wearing a chef’s uniform and hat.  Her striking green eyes expressed hurt and fear, but she kept her emotions in control. He kept his composure and decided he had to stop this-even at his expense.

“Father, they are requesting your presence in 10 minutes.” Antonio said as he stood behind his father. He inherited his quiet demanding presence from his father.

David said nothing. He left the dinner on the counter as he stood back and turned to storm out of the double doors. Antonio glanced nervously as he took one more look at his crush and left the kitchen.  Sophia could feel the blood drain from her face as the whole spectacle ended.
