Jace took his place along the far wall of the hotel ballroom. He tugged at the collar of his white dress shirt, and brushed his hand across the jacket of his tuxedo. As uncomfortable as the monkey suit felt, he imagined it would have been worse if he’d rented instead of bought. The finely tailored rig had set him back a pretty penny, but he had a feeling it wouldn’t be the last time he’d have to wear the darned thing. Who knew, when you entered the private sector as a member of the security staff, you’d be called upon to attend one fancy affair after another?

About fifty feet to his left, a hulk of man had also pinned himself to his assigned station. Security for one of the other companies in attendance, no doubt. The poor sap looked as out of place as Jace felt.

All the movers and shakers of the high-tech world were here. Some from as far away as Asia. This symposium had been postponed twice in the past month because of security concerns. Yet, after consultation with the local FBI, they’d finally pulled it off. All that was left was this final black-tie dinner.

Everywhere you looked, there were elegantly dressed people. Some were owners, some shareholders which—he supposed—were also owners. Others were the upper echelons of corporate management. Even Nate was seated among the elite, sharing table space with TSA owner, Bill Carnegie, and Carnegie’s latest trophy wife.

She was there too. As much as Jace tried to ignore her. Allison Dow, attorney extraordinaire, and the most aggravating woman he’d ever met. Also, one of the most beautiful and intelligent. He hated contradictions but… there she was directly in his line of sight.

The Viper. A rightfully earned nickname for her sharp wit and dogged determination. Allison Dow was willing to do whatever she had to in order to close an important contract negotiation. Even it meant getting down in the muck with those less scrupulous than her. If talk around the TSA watercooler was accurate, nobody ever got there first. Unless she let them.

As if she could feel his gaze on her, she stood and swiveled, her dark gaze scanning the expanse of the large room. She’d shed her usual business suit and prim pastel blouse in favor of a slinky little number that likely cost more than a half-dozen tuxedos. She’d also ditched her black-rimmed glasses, possibly in favor of contacts.

Free of its usual pinned up style, her long, silky chestnut hair feathered across her slim shoulders with a few strands daring to sneak forward and fall into her… um… cleavage. Jace swallowed and shifted his gaze to the opposite side of the ballroom. Somewhere—anywhere—away from Allison Dow’s unexpectedly alluring appearance.
