Excerpts from Getting Hitched in Pumpkin City

Excerpt #1 ( 122 Words)

The lighting wasn’t good but the house did appear quite large and spacious from what she could tell from the exterior. And even better, it sat on an untouched acre of land that was also now apparently hers. She could hardly imagine the peace and quiet there. The inheritance came as a complete surprise, especially since she’d never met her Uncle Benjamin. She understood him to have been her grandmother’s younger wayward brother who’d had some rift with the family. Since her mother passed away from breast cancer two years ago and she was an only child, Alexis was the man’s last living relative, meaning that Uncle Benjamin’s property in Pumpkin City would now be hers to do with as she pleased.

Excerpt #2 ( 235 Words)

“I can’t believe someone would abandon this sweet guy,” Alexis murmured as the animal fondly licked her hand.

Cassidy shook her head. “It never ceases to amaze me when people don’t consider the welfare of their pets. Apparently, Cheesecake’s previous owners relocated across the country and just left him outside in their backyard to fend for himself. He was suffering from hypothermia and severe dehydration when he arrived at the shelter.”

“Well, you’ve done an amazing job fostering him,” Alexis said. “I remember when you first brought him home and how thin and sad he looked. Now you’re all fattened up and feeling like your old self again, right boy?” She gazed into the dog’s big brown eyes as he happily chewed his treat.

“Now we need to get you feeling like your old self again, too,” said Cassidy, giving her a pointed look.

Alexis sighed and tugged her blue knit winter hat with the pom-pom on top lower over her ears. She’d had the thing for years but it was warm and always made her smile when she put it on. “I don’t know if that’s ever going to happen,” she muttered, rising and walking to the locker’s open bay. She surveyed the piles of boxes left for them to move into the truck bed. Cassidy joined her side and flicked her blond dreadlocks over her shoulder. The tips nearly reached her waist. “

Excerpt #3 ( 209 Words)

“That I can understand,” Alexis replied. She lifted another box into the truck bed and rubbed her sore biceps. “Thank you so much for all you’ve done for me lately. I owe you like a thousand dinners.”

“No you don’t. Like I said, this is mutually beneficial. Not to mention, what Griffin and Lauren did to you was just shocking. I thought I knew her well enough at least, but not as well as you did of course, since you guys were in the same sorority together and I didn’t do the Greek thing.”

Tears pricked Alexis’s eyes and she blinked rapidly, willing them not to spill over.

She’d cried enough as it was without adding more to the pot.

“Guess you can say she did me a favor. Catching her and Griffin in bed together at his apartment last year made me realize who my true friends were. Namely, you.”

She paused to rearrange the boxes to make room for those that were left and wiped a stray tear away with her gloved hand before turning back to her friend and reaching over to give her a quick hug. She wondered if Cassidy could even feel the squeeze considering the thick down-filled puffer coats they were both wearing.

Excerpt #4 (162 Words)

Alexis looked down at Cheesecake, who’d made it halfway through his bone during their afternoon conversation. He thumped his tail. “Don’t worry, boy,” she said, kneeling again to pet the dog’s soft coat of fur. “My building doesn’t allow pets but the landlord knows I’m moving out and I talked him into letting you come over tonight after promising to give my apartment a thorough cleaning before I leave. Tomorrow, you’ll get to tag along with us on a little road trip to my new house in Pumpkin. Your foster mom’s such a good friend for helping. I hope I can do something to repay her for her kindness someday. I’m going to do my absolute best to turn my new house into the kind of place where people want to come to celebrate the special moments in their life. I’ll bet we could both use some of that positive energy, can’t we?” The dog yipped and licked her knee in response.

Excerpts from Freedom In Friday Harbor

Excerpt #1 ( 224 Words)

Dr. Fielding crossed her legs and ran a hand down the leg of her cream-colored pantsuit. “Those were decisions that you made in the past. Now is the present, and the future has yet to be written. You have the ability to make different choices going forward.”

“I’m scared though—you know I haven’t even considered dating since the divorce went through,” Summer said. “I’ve been too busy focusing on work.”

“That’s something we can look at more closely,” said the counselor. “I know your 30th birthday is coming up. Do you have any fun plans to celebrate?”

“No,” Summer said morosely. “Quite frankly, I don’t even want to think about it. I’m so not where I wanted to be at this age.”

Dr. Fielding chuckled and took off her glasses. “Honey, no one ever is.”

The therapist’s light-hearted comment lifted her spirits. “I guess that’s true,” she said with a rueful smile.

Dr. Fielding glanced at the wall clock. “I’m afraid our time is up. Try to do something nice for yourself for your birthday. Give yourself some grace. You’re only human. And remember -awareness is key to not repeating the patterns of the past.”

“God forbid I should ever do that,” Summer said, shuddering.”

That’s something we can both agree upon,” said Dr. Fielding, rising to give her a quick hug goodbye.

Excerpt #2 ( 278 Words)

“I have a project that I’d like to put you on. But it would mean that you’d have to travel.”

“Travel?” she repeated, her curiosity peaked.

Jim held up his hand. “Not that far, just a ferry ride over to Friday Harbor in the San Juans. Have you been there before?”

“No,” she said. “I moved up to Seattle after graduating from college in Oregon but haven’t visited the islands off the coast yet.”

“It’s beautiful out there,” Jim said. “Friday Harbor is the main town on San Juan Island. It’s a historic seaport village – very quaint.”

 “What’s the job?” she asked.

He grinned. “I need you to supervise the building of a float for the town’s annual 4th of July parade.”

“A float? Parade?” she asked incredulously. Her job usually consisted of designing digital marketing promotions. “I’m – I’m not sure I’m qualified,” she said, gulping. “Oh, I think you’re plenty qualified,” Jim said, chuckling.“

A construction crew can do the physical labor part. But I need you to design the thing and make sure the parade goes according to plan. It would of course therefore require you to work over the holiday. To make up for it, I want you to take a few days off and relax afterward.”

“Hm,” she said. “That does sound nice. What is the company that’s hiring us to do their float?”

“The Pacific Beekeepers Association,” Jim said, his eyes sparkling.

Summer groaned inwardly, remembering the pain when a bee stung her in the arm at a summer picnic when she was six.

She nodded, doing her best to smile. “Right,” she said. “You can count on me, sir. I’ll do it.”

Excerpt #3 (240 Words)

“Coffee would be perfect, thanks,” replied Summer.

“Coming right up,” said the server. “Help yourself to the buffet whenever you want.” She turned and headed toward the kitchen, passing a waiter carrying a pitcher of ice water. Summer held out her glass for him to fill and then took a few sips of the cool liquid. Rising, she walked over to the buffet, interested to see what was in the steaming trays. She picked up a plate and walked slowly down the line, choosing scrambled eggs, sausage, and hash browns. A tall carousel of delectable-looking bakery items on a cart caught her attention. There was one blueberry scone left. Unable to resist the temptation, she reached for it, promptly bumping the hand of someone else, also making a grab for it from the opposite side.

“Oops, sorry,” she said, pulling her hand back quickly.

“Oh no, I’m sorry,” said the tall, dark, and ridiculously handsome man who stepped out from around the cart. He smiled at her affably and handed her the scone.

“You take it,” he said.

“No, you,” she said, hoping she wasn’t blushing as she passed it back to him.

He stepped backward and shook his head.

“Well, when my sister and I wrestled as kids over the last cookie or slice of pie, our mother would always make us split it. So how about we share?” he suggested.

She grinned. “That only sounds fair,” she said.

Excerpts

Excerpt #1 ( 145 Words)

Callie smoothed the sleeve of her blue cocktail dress.

The holiday office party was a success.

Streamers and helium-filled balloons in gold and white decorated the expansive conference room of Winthrop Public Relations and Advertising.

The event planner had the large mahogany table and accompanying leather chairs placed into temporary storage and brought in small, round dining tables with matching chairs covered in gold and white linens.

Atop the confetti-strewn tables, candles flickered in crystal votive holders. Buffet tables were set up along one side of the room and currently held steaming trays of beef tenderloin, chicken au vin, scalloped potatoes, and braised asparagus. The smaller dessert buffet offered an assortment of the finest chocolate truffles, tortes, and shortbreads.

Callie looked around the room at her colleagues and their significant others clad in festive, jewel-toned colors as they laughed and ate. She should be happy.

Excerpt #2 ( 114 Words)

Callie’s thoughts were interrupted by the sound of clinking glass. Hunter stood in the center of the room, calling for everyone’s attention. His dark gray Brooks Brothers suit showed off the body of the former football athlete and complimented his thick blond hair.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” he smiled broadly, “may I have your attention, please.” His eyes roamed over the crowd before settling onto her.

What was going on? He hadn’t told her he would be making a speech tonight.

“Callie, could you come up here and join me?” He gestured towards her, leaving her no real choice but to set her water glass on the closest table before winding her way towards him.

Excerpt #3 (132 words)

“I know we haven’t talked about this,” he continued, “but hey, I know you feel the same way I do, babe. We are Chicago’s next power couple, after all. What could be better than making it official? Let’s take this city by storm, sweetheart.” He dropped down to one knee and reached into his coat pocket, drawing out a small black velvet-covered box.

This can’t be happening, Callie thought as beads of cold sweat began to form on her forehead.

Hunter popped the box open with his index finger, revealing a gigantic solitaire. “Say you’ll be my wife,” he said, looking intently into her eyes.

Callie could feel gazes shifting in her direction as the room grew silent. “I… I…” she stuttered, then promptly burst into tears and ran from the room.

Excerpt #4 (170 Words)

Her boyfriend, Hunter Sandstrom, was also part of the company and highly esteemed by her father. In fact, the men would often get together on weekends to join other associates for rounds of golf. Hunter was everything a girl could want—smart, successful, good-looking. Always the perfect gentleman. He loved to call them Chicago’s next power couple. Wasn’t that a good thing?

Callie’s smile wavered a little. What was wrong with her? Maybe she was just tired, having worked overtime again the night before on a project deadline. She sighed. Working overtime was certainly nothing new for her. She relished the weekends when she had time to give in to her passion for cooking and baking. She enjoyed experimenting with different flavor combinations and spices, loving the tactile sensations of kneading out dough or practicing her knife skills. A ‘silly little hobby,’ her father called it. However, Callie couldn’t help but look forward to the minute she could go into her kitchen and put on her favorite blue-and-white gingham apron.

Excerpt

The putter of a diesel engine carried to where they stood at the side of the house.

“Sounds like the priest’s clunker.” Clayton puffed on the cigarette.

Knots formed in Darryl’s stomach. Did Emery accompany Father Bennie? What the heck was the priest doing up at Long River? Darryl lived at the reserve’s most northern district, far from Grassy, where the Matawapits resided.

Don’t watch them go by.

The car slowed and then turned into the driveway. Black, wavy hair appeared in the windshield. Hot tingles shot through Darryl’s arms and legs. He’d better get himself under control. Running into the coward was expected. It was the reason why he’d raced around the reserve like a fool earlier, trying to figure out what to say when they eventually crossed paths.

Had Emery come to apologize? Maybe reconnect? Wait a second. Someone had probably sent him. In the past, he hadn’t possessed the testicular fortitude to initiate anything. Father Bennie and Deacon Matawapit were up to something.

“Is that Emery?” Clayton frowned.

“Yeah. Gimme a second.” Darryl marched around the side of the house. When the car door opened, he froze.

Emery’s long legs appeared. He straightened to a towering six-foot-something. His red lips, smooth, pale skin, and high cheekbones melted Darryl’s insides. Tight muscles filled out Emery’s blue polo shirt and white dress pants. His hair curled around his square shoulders. This wasn’t a skinny seventeen-year-old kid who’d favored worn jeans, hiking boots, and t-shirts, but a twenty-seven-year-old elegant man.

“Hello. I was hoping to catch you at home.” Emery doffed his sunglasses, exposing his thick black lashes and bright green eyes. He tapped his shades against firm thighs Darryl had caressed during the best time of his life.

Although Emery’s voice was deeper, the feathery tone still stroked Darryl deep inside his jeans. Quivering, he spat out a, “Hel—hi…” He cleared his throat of the damned frog making him sound like an idiot. “Hello.”

“I-I planned on stopping by sooner.” Emery’s gaze roamed in every direction. “I was busy… unpacking”

Darryl motioned to the side of the house. “I was heading out for a drive once I finish talking to someone.”

“Oh…” Emery’s gaze settled on Clayton, who appeared around the corner. “I’ll come back another day when you’re not busy.” Disappointment lined his voice. “Have a good night.”

When Emery turned for the car, Darryl’s frozen heart churned into overdrive. The question jumped from his mouth. “Where’re you going?”

Emery pivoted. “Back to the rectory. It’s where I’m staying during my visit.”

Darryl stifled his groan. Call him a sucker for asking. “You came here for a reason. Why?”

“Uh… I—” Emery held a fist to his mouth and coughed. “Do you have time for a walk?”

A shiver careened along Darryl’s spine. Instead of being prodded, Emery, of all people, had initiated something.

Clayton’s slim brows twisted downwards. “I guess we’re done?”

Everyone knew how tight Emery and Darryl had once been. The cunning coyote had better not think of Darryl as a traitor who’d lose focus on the Traditionalists Society’s mandate now that Emery was back. “We can finish our convo tomorrow. Stop by my office in the morning.”

“Never mind. I’m outta here.” Clayton stamped to his pick-up parked on the side of the road. He glowered at Emery, who returned the frown with a nod.

Fire crackled through Darryl’s veins. Hostility and rudeness to another wasn’t the purpose of the Traditionalists Society.

“We can meet at the Treaty Grounds.” Darryl used an even tone, though his pulse points raced faster than a bear chasing down dinner. “Right now my road’s pretty much the Trans Canada.”

A truck pulling a skiff rambled by.

“Everyone’s heading out for the evening fish.”

“Okay.” Emery’s mouth remained closed while his full lips moved upward. He had the same shy smile capable of melting Darryl’s limbs. “I’ll meet you there.”

“Sure.” Darryl slid on the four-wheeler.

Emery opened the car door and got in. He drove off and left a trail of dust in his wake.

Darryl turned the key. The machine’s engine roared to life. This couldn’t be happening. Someone must have plopped him in the middle of a dream. Who was the courageous man who’d come of his own accord?

He steered the four-wheeler down the driveway. People changed. Before entering St. Michael’s Seminary, Emery had lived in Thunder Bay to attend university. Being out from under his father’s thumb had probably given his confidence a much-needed boost.

His dad’s here and he sought me out.

Had Emery told Father Bennie his intentions for the evening? Where would their talk lead to? There was only one way to find out—drive faster to the Treaty Grounds.
