Chapter One

Present Day

Detective Callum Palmer dragged his fingers through his thick hair. He had a murder to solve. A pile of skeletons had been found in an old mine shaft, and he’d been assigned the case. He and his new partner, who had yet to show up. Irritated, he paced the precinct floor.

“Calm down, Palmer,” one of the other detectives said, “You’re driving me nuts.”

“Tough shit,” Callum shot back at him.

A small woman dressed in black entered the room and his line of vision. A real looker. Callum wondered who she was and what she was doing there. Her posture and dress gave an image of a professional. Not the type of victim he usually dealt with.

“Detective Callum Palmer?” she said.

“Yes?” Oh oh. Callum hoped the thought that just popped into his head proved wrong.

She held out a hand so delicate, he feared he’d break those tiny bones if he grasped it. “My name is Detective Olivia Hansen. I’m your new partner.”

Fuck. They sent me a female partner? Great. Fucking great. Resigned, he took her hand. “All right, Hansen. You’re just in time. Come with me. A murder has been called in and we’ve been given the job of investigating it.”

“Fine,” she said. “Nothing I like better than to keep busy.”

Turning away, Callum rolled his eyes, and led the way to his car.

BOOK ONE

Everything was happening so quickly. One minute Willow was talking to her friend Ashlyn and now here she was standing in a lavish room face to face with the boy from the forest. His piercing blue eyes were staring straight into hers, as if seeing her soul.

“Hello,” he said with a smile. “I was wondering if we would ever meet again. Tell me how did you escape the necrid fire?”

“How … how did you get into my dream? What happened to my friend?” Willow barked.

“How?” he laughed. “You called me here. Actually, seems a little unfair you know my name and I don’t know yours.”

Willow realized earlier she had thought of him for a brief moment. “Lance … your name. I was thinking of the forest and what happened. That was enough to call you here?”

“Yes, but how exactly do you know my name?” Lance moved to the back of a chair and rested against it waiting for a reply.

“I heard someone call you in the forest when I was running away,” she said.

“So, back to the beginning, You know my name, but what is yours?” he said.

“Why did you do it? Why did you destroy my home?” Willow asked ignoring the prince’s question.

“That is a long story. Why don’t you tell me how you escaped?” he asked getting a bit aggravated.

That seemed to be an ongoing theme for her with boys, she aggravated them. Willow’s mind turned to a similar conversation she had with Mike. She decided after remembering the duct tape that she needed to come up with an answer for the prince.

“I … don’t know,” she answered with a sigh. “I know I was in an accident and a doctor sedated me so I could rest. If you had let my friend stay longer she might have told me more.” She wasn’t really lying about that, so even if he had the ability to sense an untruth he wouldn’t question what she had just said. She wasn’t about to give him more information than she needed to. He may be cute but she wasn’t stupid.

FROM THE AUTHOR

There has been a lot of talk about mental health issues lately. I myself have been diagnosed with clinical depression. It takes up a lot of my life. Reading and writing are the only things I have found that help (in connection with regular medication), even if only for a short time. To escape to a different world can make a big difference in my mood in real life. To put things in perspective, when I was at my lowest point, I couldn’t open mail, talk on the phone or even drive to the store. Walls of sadness surrounded me. As they closed in, tears would fall, There didn’t need to be a reason or trigger.

People ask me why I started writing. My answer is simple: I wanted to create a world other people could escape to. I wanted to share the place that helped me for many years.

I read books as well as write them. I visit the worlds many different authors have created. It makes me feel better and gives me strength to face real life again. I want to thank everyone who writes. I want them to know they are making a difference.

I have always said that as long as one person finds a little bit of happiness out of my books, I am, in my opinion, an accomplished author. The same is true for every writer out there. Please don’t ever let anyone tell you different.

I’m not a poet, but I’d like to share one that I wrote after my husband’s death.

On this day your light faded away
I brought you back in hopes you’d stay
In selfish dreams I needed you there
My whole world required your care
By the time I realized it was too late
You would now suffer to a new date
I didn’t worry about how you felt
My mind clouded with the bad hand I’d been dealt
To comfort me you tried to return
I can only imagine the painful sting and burn
Once again you put your needs on hold
You always had a heart of gold
If I could go back to that very night
I’d let your soul fly peacefully into the light
I am sorry I wasn’t stronger
I only wished you’d lived a little longer.

Hope you have a great day. Keep writing and I’ll keep reading.

CAPTURING GABRIEL

What’s a handsome Colombian psychic with super-hero-power to do with a spirited Navajo beauty who invades his territory? Why, kidnap her of course.

Chopper pilot Josie Tseda served in Afghanistan, extracting soldiers from deadly situations. She knows how to take care of herself. But when she vows to find Gabriel Valdez, a Guardian of Danu, and deliver him to a gathering of the Council of Guardians, she may have bitten off more than she can chew.

Locating Gabriel in the mountains of Colombia is hard enough. Josie didn’t count on ending up his prisoner – or on falling for him.

Gabriel is battling Colombian drug traffickers and seeking revenge against the man who murdered his mother. He’s not looking for romance and doesn’t trust the feisty American female who wants to fly him off to the U.S. The message she conveys directing him to return with her, supposedly coming from the High Guardian, may be a lie to ensnare him and steal the precious scroll he guards.

Yet, he can’t help wanting her. Will he allow her to capture his heart or will the secret power he wields ultimately drive her away?

Excerpt

He grinned, slashing grooves framing his mouth. “I cannot say, Señorita Tseda. I have never before kidnapped an innocent woman.” He laughed low in his throat. “Nor do I believe I have done so today.”
“Oh! You, you skunk!” Straightening abruptly, she jerked away from him. Her sudden, violent movement startled the horse, making the bay shake its head and dance sideways, rocking Josie forward. She started to topple off and yelped in fright. Valdez’s arm shot out to catch her below her breasts. She gasped and unconsciously locked her hands around that steely band as he hauled her safely back against him.
At the same time, he mouthed a flow of soothing Spanish to the horse. Once the gelding settled down, Josie grew conscious of her captor’s arm beneath her breasts and how his hand cupped the side of one full mound. Then she realized her own hands still clutched his arm in a death grip. She instantly released him but he did not loosen his hold or remove his hand from her breast.
“You can let go of me now,” she said.
“And allow you to fall and be injured should you become angry again?” He tisked in disapproval. “No, no, that I cannot do.”
“Mister, either move your hand or lose some skin,” she gritted, fingernails poised over his bare wrist.
He arched his brows in challenge but lowered his hand to her waist. “You are una pequeña tigresa, a little tigress full of fire and fight. It would be my pleasure to tame you if I could but trust you.”
“You and who else, tough guy? And I told you not to call me little.”
He shrugged. “But you are petite. Is this a bad thing?”
“It is when all the other women in my family are tall. Makes me the runt of the litter,” she grumbled. Why she told him that, she didn’t know.
“I see. But surely you are the most beautiful one in your family,” he murmured, adding a playful grin.
Caught off guard by his flattery, Josie stared into his moss-green eyes. He thought her beautiful, even in her disheveled condition? Her heartbeat quickened and a warm flush crept up her throat into her face. Then reality struck like a jet of icy water.
Whoa there, girl. He’s just trying to soften you up so he can worm whatever information he thinks you’re hiding out of you. Scowling at the thought, she accused, “First you kidnap me, then you sweet-talk me. What’s your game?”
“I play no game,” he said sharply, all playfulness gone. “You are the one who came seeking me, invading my space as you Americans say. What is your game?”
“My game is to keep my promise to Lara. Which I can’t do stuck on this mountain, and when you won’t even let me finish telling you why she sent me here.” She crossed her arms and turned her face away, staring into the fog-shrouded trees.
After a brief silence, Valdez said, “Very well, tell me the rest now.”

Bio

Lyn Horner resides in Fort Worth, Texas – “Where the West Begins” – with her husband and several very spoiled cats. Trained in the visual arts, Lyn worked as a fashion illustrator and art instructor before she took up writing. She loves crafting passionate love stories, both historical and contemporary. Lyn also enjoys reading, gardening, visiting with family and friends, and cuddling her furry, four-footed children.

Celtic myth and folklore, as well as unusual powers of the mind fascinate Lyn, influencing most of her writing. Recently, she has also become interested in Native American mythology.

The author’s Texas Devlins series blends authentic Old West settings, steamy romance and psychic mysterious. This series has earned multiple awards and nominations, including Crowned Heart reviews and a Rone Award nomination from InD’Tale Magazine.

Lyn is now hard at work on her romantic suspense series, Romancing the Gaurdians. These books combine her trademark flashes of psychic phenomena with Irish folklore and a chilling apocalyptic sub-theme. Along the way, readers are treated to thunderous action, terrifying suspense and sizzling romance.

Tuatha Dé Danann legend, basis for Lyn’s Romancing the Guardians series:
“In Irish-Celtic mythology, the Tuatha Dé Danann (“People of the goddess Danu”) are the Irish race of gods, founded by the goddess Danu. These gods, who originally lived on ‘the islands in the west’, had perfected the use of magic. They traveled on a big cloud to the land that later would be called Ireland and settled there.” – Micha F. Lindemans, “Tuatha Dé Danann,” Encyclopedia Mythica Online.

Legends say the Tuatha Dé Danann defeated the Firbolg and Fomorians, prehistoric inhabitants of Ireland. Later conquered by Milesians from the Iberian Peninsula, they were driven to the underworld. Called Aes Sidhe – pronounced Ays Sheeth-uh – they reside in fairy mounds and are invisible to mortals, but in a battle against evil, they will fight beside mankind, wielding lances of blue flame, carrying snow-white shields.
