Havenport

Welcome to Havenport, RI a fictional town not far from Newport where you’ll find romance, suspense, time travel and secrets shared by five authors in genres you love. Today they are releasing five new standalone books, come check them out and stay for a spell…

A quick note from Havenport newspaper gossip, Candy Apples….

Okay, here’s the skinny. Havenport’s a great town. Perfect for a gossip like me. 😉 I’ve been writing this column for years and never struggle for a story. Easiest job I’ve ever had!

We may have started as a small fishing town (stop by our maritime museum to learn more) but we’ve expanded into a thriving hub for business of all sorts. Lots of restaurants, a charming bookstore, souvenir shops, whale watching, ghost tours, even a metaphysical shop (the manager’s a member of our local coven)…there’s never a shortage of things to do here.

We’ve got Manor Road, with titans of business known for bringing the money to town—and the drama. I don’t need a shovel to dig up the dirt (or the skeletons) over there.

I’m no less busy when I take a stroll down Main Street and eavesdrop—um, I mean, talk to the shopkeepers. They’re a nosy bunch, but they’ve got your best interest at heart. I’ve seen some great couples get together over a drink at Royce’s Tavern or after dropping off a pup for daycare at Wags & Walks.

With our close proximity to major cities like Newport, Providence, Boston, and New York City, we attract just about everybody. And, in the spirit of our founding fathers, Havenport welcomes them all with open arms. And when I say everyone, I mean it.

Are you looking for a hometown hero to sweep you off your feet? A debonair best-selling author? Is a time traveler from the Roaring Twenties more your style? If you’re looking for adventure or to reunite with a lost love, you’ll find it here.

And I’ll report all the juicy details.

Victorian Town

VICTORIAN TOWN

by Nancy Thorne

Genre: YA Paranormal Romance with Mystery & Time Travel elements

Publisher: Soul Mate Publishing

Abby Parker planned out her whole life: complete her final year of high school, go to college, get a job, move away from her insane family, stay best friends with Jessica.

But, that was before she broke into the nearby tourist attraction and unwittingly answered a call from a centuries-old spirit who dragged her into the 19th century.

Now she must solve a Victorian mystery without getting herself killed, or worse, spend a lifetime trapped in the past, leaving behind everyone she loves and altering their lives forever.

When she meets gorgeous Benjamin, the future looks a lot like wreckage.

I looked for a lock on the door but there wasn’t one. All I needed was for Dr. Edgecombe to walk in and see me naked, even if he was a real doctor or a real delusion. I stripped while listening for footsteps and placed my torn and dirty clothes in a pile beside the washbasin table. The porcelain pitcher was filled to the brim with water, seemingly prepared for unexpected guests. I poured it all into the basin.

A small box that read LYE SOAP had been placed on two woven facecloths and one towel. I dipped one of the cloths into the water and felt the ring slip to my knuckle. I ran the washcloth over my hands before scrubbing every other part of me. It was when I dried myself with the extremely scratchy towel that I noticed the sparkling luster of the ring’s silver. I squinted at it uncertainly. Nothing made any sense. I needed to get into that bed.

Plopping onto the mattress, my body sank gently into the feathery stuffing until I was sure I’d never been that comfortable in my life. I grabbed the side of the bedspread, pulled it over me, and fixated on the ceiling for what felt like the longest time, counting the circular knots in the wood − and that’s when I must have dozed off.

“Are you awake, Abigail?” Martha’s voice seeped through the door.

I opened my eyes, one at a time, to the ceiling. Still in Victorian Town. “Yes, I think so.”

“Dinner is almost ready. You must be famished.”

Dinner? I must have slept for hours. “Oh, okay. I’ll just be a few minutes.”

“Do take your time, Abigail. I have given you a respectful allotment of advance notice.”

The latch secured to the chest at the bottom of the bed was easy to open. However, the solid wood lid was heavier than I imagined and difficult to raise. I heaved until it stayed upright, then peered at the contents. Linens and clothes in a multitude of colors and prints were folded with exactness and nestled in layers. On top of everything was a red dress.

“Will have to do.” I lifted it from the trunk and placed it on the bed. It had a fitted waist and a wide full skirt with buttons that ran up the front from the midsection to the lace trim on the collar. I then took out everything that looked like underwear and placed each item beside the dress. Every piece of clothing appeared lovingly cared for. There was nothing at all in the trunk that resembled a bra, and the closest thing to clean panties I was going to get were the pajama-style pantalettes Martha had mentioned. They reached almost to my ankles and were sewn together along the inside seam until reaching the crotch, where they were just, well, open, so I don’t think spinster aunt had mended them very well.

✯✯✯✯✯ What a unique love story! by Liza O’Connor

I don’t even know how to share this story without spoilers.

Thereforth, let me tell you about the author…she has done a great deal of research for this story which takes place in modern times and the Victorian era in the U.S. She lays the town out in fabulous detail. The clothes, the houses, the blacksmith, even the privy.

The heroine, Abby, was born in modern times to an unhappy family. The only ones who seems to love her is her dog and her best friend.

By placing a ring Abby found upon her finger, she ends up in the same town, only more than a hundred years earlier. Despite her strange clothes (she’s wearing pants), her bemoaning the loss of her cell phones, and the inability to dance properly, a family takes her in, and she adapts and falls in love with the smithy Ben.

Thus, she returns to her own time soon after. For it she stays, she’ll change history. To prove the point, she and her best friend research the town in modern time. However, when people that she loves in this past have futures that turn out less than what she wants, Abby returns to try and fix matters…several times. It’s a tricky thing when you play with the past. And the best of intentions are not a sure fix.

And I’m not saying anymore, other than READ THIS BOOK!

✯✯✯✯✯ Great read! by Sarah Rutter

Honestly couldn’t put this book down. I kept telling myself “just one more chapter” but then I’d read five! Overall a really great read.

✯✯✯✯ YA Time-Travel by Petula Winmill

Abigail Parker chases her dog into a local tourist attraction and finds something he dug up. She ends up suddenly transported into the past, with a mystery to solve. Will her traveling backwards and forwards mess with history ?? If so who will be affected ??

This is a sweet innocent time-travel story. Our heroine is a teenager with an unhappy family life and a best friend who is not pleased with her new interest.

An entertaining book for younger readers.

✯✯✯✯ Changing the past by Rebecca Austin

Abby Parker is following her dog Riley when she finds a ring that takes her back in time to 1876. There she must solve a mystery regarding the disappearance of Elizabeth Edgecombe, the sister of her new friend Martha.

But when Abby takes off the ring she is back to the current time with her best friend Jess. The two work together to try and figure out what happened in the past.

But when Abby meets Benjamin Dunstone in the past, where will Abby remain?

I enjoyed this book and how Abby was torn between the two worlds and trying to do what she could to save those she cared about. Yet she found her friendship with Jess was starting to get strained as Jess was worried that Abby was going to change the past so that it would alter the future.

I thought it was great how the author explained everything in the past to Abby and how much of a hard time Abby had initially with adapting to everything. She thought it was a joke to begin with so it was pretty interesting how she realized the truth.

I was super curious to see what was going to happen every time Abby went back after learning what was going to happen with the archives and how she did change certain things.

I wasn’t really surprised at the end but part of me was as I really thought Jess would be involved.

When she meets gorgeous Benjamin, the future looks a lot like wreckage.

I waited for him to make the next move, to tell me how inappropriate, how forward that was of me. As I struggled to think of how best to offer an explanation, he turned to me. Gently but deliberately, he moved his hand up my arm, stopping at the nape of my neck beneath the ribbon of the bonnet.

The moment he leaned in, I closed my eyes. His lips, soft and full, touched mine with the modest pressure of an indecisive act. A warm energy coursed through my body, but the strangest thing was that everything felt unbelievably familiar, like it had all been rehearsed before that moment. I held onto this profound feeling, not wanting it to leave, until Ben removed his lips from mine.

Even with the whistled melodies from a pair of cardinals outside the church’s entrance, the following silence felt awkward. It persisted, and I assumed Ben was already regretting kissing me.

“Miss Abigail−”

I brought up a hand and covered his mouth. “It’s okay.”

We walked down the hill without saying another word. A lot of activity was happening on Main Street: coaches lined the front of the Royal Hotel as travelers zipped in and out of the main entrance; horse carts delivered goods in dashes of haste; store merchants hurried beyond their open doors; street sellers sold goods out of baskets; helpers swept the boardwalk; ladies could be seen purchasing last minute necessities behind the windows of each shop.

Ben accompanied me up the stairs of Town Hall’s entrance and stopped on the landing before we reached the front door. I peered through the window. Martha arranged long-stemmed flowers in a vase on a table at the side of the ballroom. A young man placed a candelabra on a table and then another on top of a piano. Ben had already started back to the street when I turned. He waved. I waved back. Still a chance he’ll change his mind.

The gloves were easier to remove now that one was missing its button. I placed them, and the button, on the ledge of the window and took off the ring.

Jess was still sitting on my bed when the haze cleared, but her tapping fingers had moved from her chin, which now rested on her knuckles. It was obvious it had taken longer for me to return this time. It made sense to me right then that the ring held within it a finite amount of energy with which to transport me to the past and back home, like a battery depleting its energy with each use. And, I had no idea how to recharge it

Frozen Heart

FROZEN HEART

Calidora series, the prequel

by Ella Medler

Genre: Time-Travel Fantasy

Quiet and listless, the glass heart sat hidden under layers of unremarkable clutter, its secret safe. The human hands had touched it often through the strata of debris, but until now, had never uncovered it fully.

At last, the yellow duster cut through the grime, and the heart began to shift. It would most likely have frozen over again, up on its high shelf, if the cat’s careless pouncing hadn’t made if fall into a box full of tinsel.

This is how the history of time and place began to change — with the story of the frozen heart.

“I would love to travel in time with you, Mal.”

His answering grin almost turned her knees to jelly, he was that handsome.

“First, you must make sure you don’t lose track of me. I can’t even imagine the trouble you’d get into without me there to guide you.”

Khira hooked the ribbon over her head. If she let go, the glass heart would dangle right over hers, she realized. “Is this okay?” she asked. Mal nodded. “Wait! Do I need anything? Boots? A coat? Cash?”

Mal smiled again. “It won’t matter. I can make you fit in anywhere.” He touched his hand to the wall of glass. “Give me your hand.”

Khira placed the tips of her fingers over his hand. A helix of light burst forth from the heart. It grew and pulsed around her until it became a vortex of colors, twisting and winding around each other like ribbons in a tornado, with her at the center of it all.

She clasped the heart closer to her chest as she felt her body lifting into the air. Just before she started spinning, her window crashed open and a shaggy, furry shape, somewhat reminiscent of Dodo the cat, leapt into the funnel and landed on her shoulder. Khira screamed when the creature’s claws sank into the skin on her back, but she didn’t dare let go of the heart in her hands. The whirlpool of color and motion intensified, and then exploded in a shower of stars.

Birthday Bash – Historical

Magic of Books Promotions hosted its first tour during the month of November three years ago.

The company was created from the passion and desire of its owner, Tami Adams, because of her experiences as an author. From her struggles to have her books viewed and appreciated she knew there had to be another way.

Three years later Tami no longer writes but is determined to show the world the magic that lies within the pages of all books.

The following authors are helping Magic of Books to celebrate its birthday. Enjoy.

Message from Tami:

The last three years have been an incredible journey. I’ve made so many friends who began as bloggers, readers, and authors. I have been privileged to present and showcase new and old books from seasoned and new authors. I’ve learned so much I didn’t even realize I should know prior to getting into this business. And after three years I can honestly say I’m still learning, I’m still growing, and I’m still making friends. I love and appreciate all of you who have supported my little slice of heaven. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

A heavy sigh escapes my lips. Time to meet the man who will be my husband tomorrow. “Be right down, mother.”
Magdalena pinches my cheeks to give them color and fusses over my hair. “You look lovely.”

She creases her brow. “Lucia is always polite. She will smile and let him take her hand. He will take you to the garden. You are allowed to go alone.”
“Why?”
“Because papa knows you do not love him. He knows Cosimo will not make advances, and if he did, you would not allow it. Your honor is safe.”
“Ah. Well that’s the good part at least.” I tilt my head. “Does Cosimo know Lucia doesn’t love him?”
She shrugs. “I have no idea.”
I nod, and then force a smile to my lips. “Here goes nothing.”
“What does that mean?”
“It’s just a saying.”
“You have a lot of those. Good luck.”
“Thanks.”
After taking a deep breath, I sweep the bottom of my dress up enough to allow a safe descent down the stairwell. As I near the front room, I see the back of a man’s head. He’s very tall with thick black hair. His clothes make me smile, like something out of a historical romance, which is exactly what my life has become. His blue velvet trousers fall only to his knee where they button. The remainder of his legs are covered in a similar colored material, and on his feet are shiny black shoes. His upper body is clothed in a type of jacket that matches the pants with a white collar that wraps around his neck. Around his waist is a thick belt. He looks exactly as I would expect of a sixteenth century gentleman.
When the parents’ eyes shift to me, Cosimo turns around, and my mouth falls open slightly. I don’t know what ugly means in Renaissance Italy, but this man is far from meeting that description. He is… well, he’s gorgeous. He watches me with piercing dark eyes as I study his face and finish stepping down the last few steps. He has strong features, but they come together nicely. Full lips, a classic Italian nose, lush hair. He reminds me of…
He bows slightly toward me. “Good day, Lucia. You look lovely as always.” His voice is deep and rich. It warms me like drinking a full bodied wine. His Italian is proper, elegant, sexy. I swallow slowly as I continue my approach.
He extends his hand so I take it and he places a soft kiss on it. I smile. “Thank you, Cosimo. I hope you are well.”
“I am always well in your presence.”
As he stands upright again my eyes follow his height. He has broad shoulders and amazing posture. I don’t know what to say next so I look to my pretend parents for guidance.
“Lucia dear,” the mother says. “Why not take Cosimo to see the roses blooming in the garden?”
“Yes. Would you like to walk to the garden with me?”
“I would.”
He puts his arm out for me to take and I do, recalling everything I’ve read about sixteenth century courtship. I should be demure, submissive, delicate – three things I am definitely not. We walk out to the garden and sit on a bench. Cosimo seems nervous, fidgeting and wringing his hands a bit. I decide it’s best at this point to let him lead the conversation.
After a moment of silence, he speaks. “Are you as excited as I for our union?”
Totes getting there. “Yes, of course. I am also nervous, but I will do my best.”
“You do not have to do or be anything more than you are.” He takes my hand in his swallowing hard. “I hope someday you will love me. I will work hard for your affection. I know I might not seem like the best choice, but I will be good to you.”
He’s so sweet. “Do you love me, Cosimo?”
“Oh, yes, my darling. I have loved you for a year now.”
“A year?”
“Since we started our walks alone in the garden. I feel like I have come to know you well in that time.”
“What are your hopes for our marriage?”
He smiles sweetly. “I hope to be a good husband to you. To bring a smile to your face when you see me. I hope we have children, strong, healthy children, and that we grow old in each other’s arms. I hope that you will know in your heart that you are so treasured and loved and wanted.” He lifts my hands and places a firm kiss on them. “I do so desire you, my darling, Lucia. I hope you will desire me as well.”
I smile, averting my eyes like I should. “Would you like to kiss me?”
His eyes open wide. “I would, but it is not proper.”
“Says who?”
A smile tugs at his lips. “You have never offered before. Why now when our wedding is so near?”
I half shrug. “Just seemed like it might be nice.” I cup his cheek. “What difference would it make now? I will be your wife by this time tomorrow.”
“This is quite a shift. A happy shift.”
I lean a little closer and whisper, “Do you want to?”
“I have always wanted to.”
“Then you may.”
Our mouths move close until they touch. His lips press against mine, softly at first, but then firmer as his hands slide down my arms. He keeps his lips closed even when I slightly part mine. Slowly, he pulls back, kisses me once more, then sits upright. That was a pretty good kiss.
“I am honored, Lucia. Thank you. I look forward to many more kisses.”
“You are terribly sweet, Cosimo.” I smile. “Will we go away for a honeymoon?”
He tilts his head, narrowing his eyes. “You did not wish it. Have you changed your mind?”
“What would we do if we did not go away?”
“My hope is we would consummate our union in our marital bed tomorrow evening. From there, I was planning to allow you to decide.”
“And if we did go away, where would we go?”
“To my family estate in Siena. We would have it for a week to ourselves. I can arrange for it if you would like it so.”
Hmm, holed up in a Tuscan house with this pretty hot guy for a week? “I would like it so.”
A gorgeous smile spreads across his lips. “I am so pleased. I thought, perhaps, you did not find me attractive. I had hoped over time you would warm to me.”
I feel a little sad for him. If only he knew I am not the woman he thinks I am. What a shock it will be when Lucia comes back. “It is a big change when a woman marries. It has taken me some time to adjust to the idea of leaving my family and my relative independence. It was not a slight to you.”
“You will have your independence. I love that about you. You have your own mind and thoughts. You read and we can talk about things. You can pursue anything you wish. All I ask of you is your fidelity and the possibility of children.”
“Of course. Those are quite reasonable requests.” Crap. I can’t get pregnant here. As it is, things are a little wonky since thanks to all of this, I had to stop my birth control pills mid-cycle. “Would you consider allowing me to wait until my next birthday?”
“Wait?”
“For children?”
“Oh.” His face falls a bit. “I have waited this long. What is a few more months?”
“You are so gracious. Thank you, Cosimo.”
He smiles, brushing his thumb across my cheek. “You are beautiful, Lucia. The most stunning woman in all of Florence. It is you that is gracious to accept my love and my name. I will care for you until my dying breath.”
I wonder if she knew he loved her like this. He’s not old at all. At twenty-nine, he’s only four years older than me, but to Lucia, he’s twelve years older. Of course in my time, a guy nearly thirty dating a girl still seventeen is illegal in most states, but you got to get things going in the sixteenth century. Short life expectancy and all that.
“I will do my best to be a good wife to you.”
“I have no doubt.”
He starts to stand, but I tug his arm. “Do you want to kiss me again?”
“May I?”
I nod. “Please.”
Our lips meet once more, and when I press against him, Cosimo sighs against my mouth and holds me tight. There is a whole lot of passion simmering underneath the surface of this proper gentleman, and I have a feeling it’s all boiling over tomorrow.
