The Troublesome Apprentice

THE TROUBLESOME APPRENTICE

The Adventures of Xavier & Vic
by Liza O’Connor

Genre: Victorian Sleuths/Mystery series

While investigating the death of a friend and client, Maddy Hamilton, Xavier Thorn (reputed to be the greatest sleuth in England) is greatly impressed with Maddy’s nephew, Victor, and offers him a job as his secretary. Aware of Xavier’s history of firing secretaries, Victor garners a promise that for three months he cannot be fired.

Vic then proceeds, in Xavier’s view, to be cheeky and impertinent at every turn. Xavier endures the impudent pup because Victor is most skilled in extracting the truth from clients and intuiting facts with little evidence to assist.

As they solve a string of cases, Xavier discovers a few more important details about his troublesome apprentice, such as her true gender, and the realization that she has awakened his long dormant heart.

“Heed my words, Victor, for if you disobey me tonight, I will torture you each day forthwith and you will never be allowed to accompany me on another mission.”

His dark eyes narrowed as he studied her, evidently trying to determine if she intended to obey his orders. “Consider it a test of your ability to follow my instructions and do not dare fail.”

“I won’t.” Vic ensured her response sounded less surly and more sincere in tone.

Xavier placed his hand on her back. “Good lad. Now, if Inspector Stone received my note, his men are probably watching the exterior of your house. When this man…, let us call him Mr. GewGaw, arrives, they will no doubt insist upon sneaking up the stairs to stand ready outside the door. I’ve forewarned your impudent butler, lest we have a commotion. However, the key reason I mention this, Victor, is to warn you to remain in the closet. If Inspector Stone burst into the room, he might mistake you for the murderer. You will thus remain hidden until I retrieve you. Do you understand?”

With a sigh, Vic nodded her head.

“Good. Now not another word or you will find yourself in hell.”

She wanted to say threats were not necessary, but she feared her protest might toss her into the promised hell, since he had said ‘not another word’.

***

Vic learned much about her new profession over the next four hours.

Lesson one: Waiting for a criminal to show might rank the most tedious and boring occupation in the world.

Lesson two: Remaining perfectly still, stuffed into a dress closet for hours, caused muscle cramps that hurt like bloody hell.

Lesson three: The desire to sniffle can reach a level of mental anguish in less than an hour.

Lesson four: One should always go to the water closet before beginning a surveillance mission.

Lesson five: If not for the mental torture of sniffle prevention, the pain of muscle cramps, and great need for a toilet, a person waiting to assist would surely fall asleep, for the body is accustomed to sleeping when it’s dark and nothing is going on.

Lesson six: The profession of banking has its good points and should be reassessed.

A soft bumping noise distracted Vic from her list. At first, she suspected Xavier had dozed off and fallen onto the floor. However, as further noise sounded, including the breaking of glass, Vic knew their plan had come to fruition. Soon, they would have Aunt Maddy’s killer.

Vic listened as the window opened followed by a great deal of huffing and wheezing. Finally, the sound of feet thudded onto the floor. Drawers opened and closed while someone systematically searched Aunt Maddy’s room. As time went on, Vic questioned the wisdom of her hiding place. Soon, the man would open the closet to search it as well. Vic readied herself to leap out, deciding surprise would be her best defense.

She could hear the man breathing outside the closet and readied herself for attack. Before the door actually opened, the lights in the room came on and Xavier spoke with a deadly calmness that sent chills down her spine. “Lost something?”

Chapter One

Present Day

Detective Callum Palmer dragged his fingers through his thick hair. He had a murder to solve. A pile of skeletons had been found in an old mine shaft, and he’d been assigned the case. He and his new partner, who had yet to show up. Irritated, he paced the precinct floor.

“Calm down, Palmer,” one of the other detectives said, “You’re driving me nuts.”

“Tough shit,” Callum shot back at him.

A small woman dressed in black entered the room and his line of vision. A real looker. Callum wondered who she was and what she was doing there. Her posture and dress gave an image of a professional. Not the type of victim he usually dealt with.

“Detective Callum Palmer?” she said.

“Yes?” Oh oh. Callum hoped the thought that just popped into his head proved wrong.

She held out a hand so delicate, he feared he’d break those tiny bones if he grasped it. “My name is Detective Olivia Hansen. I’m your new partner.”

Fuck. They sent me a female partner? Great. Fucking great. Resigned, he took her hand. “All right, Hansen. You’re just in time. Come with me. A murder has been called in and we’ve been given the job of investigating it.”

“Fine,” she said. “Nothing I like better than to keep busy.”

Turning away, Callum rolled his eyes, and led the way to his car.

Chapter One

Beltane

March 1895

Clint approached the alley leading to the rear entrance of the First National bank of Beltane. Scanning the area, he noted his men were positioned and ready as planned. They had meticulously gone over and over how the robbery was to play out. They dared not leave anything to chance.

Pete was slumped against the wall of the hotel across the street with his hat pulled low over his face. His long legs were splayed out, his arms crossed over his chest.

Billy is seated outside the Barber shop next door to the bank ‘reading’ the paper.

The horses are tethered out front and Clay is rummaging in a saddlebag for a non-existent something. They have used ponies which won’t be recognized by any townsfolk. It’s a pity the alleyway at the back of the bank wasn’t large enough to conceal their getaway horses.

A quick glance around, before he disappears into the alley, reveals the street is quiet. Most people are at home partaking of lunch. When he reached the rear door, he finds it unlocked. Sliding the kerchief up over his nose he drew his colt from the holster. Slipping inside the bank, he crept down the hall leading through to the main banking chamber at the front.

He approached a partially opened office door. Jonas McCallum, Owner, the bronze nameplate announces. He shoved the door open with force and it crashed on the wall. Jonas glanced up and leapt from his chair. “What are you doing?”

“Move over here before you get shot.” Clint pointed the gun toward the owner and indicated for him to move. When the man hesitated, he grabbed him by the neck and positioned his rotund body so he can wrap one arm around his neck and lodge his gun firmly in his back, before dragging him toward the front foyer of the bank. Clint opened a door leading into the teller area and stepped through with his hostage. The tellers turned and glanced at the stranger, fear and astonishment clearly etched on each face when they see their boss with a gun at his back.

Their attention is diverted when the front doors crash open and Clint’s three partners charge inside. Billy turned the lock on the doors while Pete and Clay move to cover the now terrified customers.

“This is a bank hold-up. Do as we say and no-one will get hurt.” Clint waved his gun at a few customers. “Get down on the floor. Don’t speak and don’t move.”

I Heard the Brides on Christmas Day

(Hearts of Owyhee novella)

Blurb

The Murdock brothers have a fine ranch in Owyhee County, Idaho. The only things missing are wives and kids, so Hec orders a couple of brides for Christmas. The catch is, woman-shy Zeke doesn’t know about it. Dinah and Stella have a plan— If the grooms don’t work out, they’ll start a restaurant. Farm chores are hard enough, but a peckish chicken and a raging blizzard don’t help matters. Can Hec and Zeke capture their hearts?

JacquieRogersThere’s just something about Christmas that has “romance” splashed all over it—the season for sharing and putting our differences aside.

The whole idea of mail-order brides—why a woman would leave everything she knew for a man she didn’t know—fascinates me.  In this story, we have two brides.  Dinah Goode lost her husband and baby within a few weeks.  Her goal is to own a restaurant and women couldn’t be chefs in Cleveland.  But those rules didn’t apply in the Idaho Territory where women could own property in their own right, and the only way she could afford to get there was to accept a proposal as a mail-order bride.

Schoolteacher Stella Clemmons has stars in her eyes—she wants children but she’s already nearly thirty years old and time’s marching on so she decided to accept a mail-order proposal.  She’s nervous about doing so, but meeting Dinah on the train was fortuitous because now she has a plan.  If Mr. Ezekiel Murdock doesn’t pan out, she and Dinah will still be fine.  Restaurants were few and far between—and even then, she could still find the right man to marry.

But neither lady knows one thing about country life.  And neither brother is quite sure what to do with these city women.

I loved the idea that Hec ordered brides for himself and his brother for Christmas.  How romantic!  But can you imagine how surprised Zeke would be?  How would he react?  And how does the culture of the East blend with that of the West?

This novella is part of the Prairie Rose Publications Third Birthday Bash.  Free books are being offered the week of August 13 – 20 at http://prairierosepublications.blogspot.com.

Would you like a copy of I Heard the Brides on Christmas Day?  Just tell us what you love about Christmas stories.  Do you read them year-around?  Does the snow cool you off on a hot August night?

EXCERPT

George and James dropped back to re-join their father and as they discussed ranch business they kept their eyes on Laura up ahead. She had just crossed the tree line and had disappeared from their sight. Joseph had just opened his mouth to call her to stay in sight when they heard her blood curdling scream.

The three men wasted no time spurring their horses into a gallop and headed in the direction the scream had come from.

Laura had dismounted and was on the ground next to a small bundle which rested half on and half off the track. Tears flooded her cheeks and she was shaking uncontrollably. When she spotted her father she jumped from the ground and raced towards him. Joseph was off his horse in a flash and folded her into his arms. While she buried her face in her father’s chest George and James dismounted and moved to check the small bundle which they could now see was the body of a young girl.

“Pa, you better come fast!” called George.

Joseph peeled Laura away from him and reached inside his pocket for a cloth to wipe her tear stained face. Holding her hand he guided her to a nearby rock and gently encouraged her to sit. He grabbed his canteen of water from his saddle bag and handed it to her “Drink Laura. Don’t move darlin’ we’ll be right over here” She gulped thirstily from the canteen while she continued to sob.

Joseph approached his sons and couldn’t stifle the gasp which escaped him as he looked at the ‘bundle’ for the first time. He could now see it was a young girl, about the same age as Laura. Her clothing had been torn to the waist and across the once creamy skin of her back were at least two dozen bloody welts.

Joseph removed his hat and immediately began firing off instructions to his shocked sons. “James, fetch blankets, water and as many clean cloths as you can find! George, hobble the horses so they don’t wander. Keep an eye out for Ben with the board so he doesn’t run over us”

The boys answered in unison “Yes, Pa!” and raced off to complete their tasks.

As the boys followed his orders Joseph assessed the young girl’s wounds further. I will get the bastards who did this! he vowed to himself.

Just at that moment, Ben, the youngest son, drove up with the buckboard and their supplies. Seeing his family moving around ahead, his father attending to something on the ground, he brought the horses to a stop.

“Ben! We have a badly injured girl. Clear a space in the buckboard and lay some blankets so when we are ready we can take her home to Ma!” called out James.

Ben jumped down and began re-arranging the rear of the buckboard. “What’s happened James?”

“Not sure yet, we just came up on her. Pa and George are with her now”

Where’s Laura?” asked Ben concerned for his sister.

“Just over yonder on a rock. She’s very upset, was her that found the girl! After the board is ready go sit with her, I need to get these supplies to Pa”

James hurried back to where Joseph and George were waiting with the girl. “Ben’s arrived Pa, he’s clearin’ a space in the buckboard and is going to calm Laura”

“Thanks son. She is bad. Looks like she has a broken leg from the angle it’s at, a broken arm and all them welts, cuts and bruises!” We need to patch her up as best we can and get her to Ma”

“She’s lost a lot of blood Pa” commented George “Will she make it?”

“I don’t know son but we will do our best for her”

“Who would do this?” asked an angry James to no-one in particular.

“I have no idea” answered Joseph “but I intend to find out and get this little girl some justice!”

“Buckboard’s ready” shouted Ben

“Go find four pieces of wood to splint an arm and a leg” called George “be as quick as you can”

“On my way” called Ben running into the trees.

Joseph removed the lid from a canteen he’d been handed and poured water onto a cloth. As gently as he could he began to clean the wounds and only then could they see the extent of the damage from the vicious attack.

With her back wounds cleaned up a little the three men gently lifted her onto a blanket which was spread on the ground, turning her over as they did so.

They inhaled deeply when they saw the girl’s face. Both of her eyes were swollen shut. She had a large cut over one eye which would require stitches. Blood had seeped into her raven black hair and congealed which left her hair in a sticky, tangled mess. Her lip was split and her cheek badly bruised. Dirt and dust had combined with blood from her wounds to form a muddy mess over much of her body.

George quickly covered her with a spare blanket to protect her dignity but couldn’t help noticing her perfectly formed breasts and slim waist which brought a stirring to his loins.

Goddamn it George! What’s wrong with you? You are looking at a woman’s breasts and getting randy when you should be more concerned with her injuries! And you’re s’posed to be courtin’ Marybeth!

Joseph took clean cloths, doused them in water and proceeded to clean her face.

“Where do you want these Pa?” asked Ben holding up four good sized sticks.

“I’ll take them. Thanks Ben” said James “Go sit with Laura”

EXCERPT

Cora stepped onto the platform in Rapid City and glanced around. She searched for John amongst the milling crowd. Her hands shook nervously as she clutched her reticule. This is it. You’re about to meet the man who is to be your husband.

“Miss Brown. Miss Rose Brown?” the station porter asked.

“Yes,” she answered.

“Your luggage is by the waiting room for you,” the man said.

Before Cora could thank him and offer a coin, he scurried away. She returned to searching the thinning crowd for John’s face.

Then, not ten feet away, she saw him for the first time. He seemed to be searching for her but how he was ever expecting to find her, she didn’t know. Cora had never sent him a picture, only a description.

She took advantage of her knowledge to study her intended. His picture did not do him justice. This was the man who was to become her husband and wow, what a man! He was tall, really tall. His blonde hair showed signs of being bleached by long hours in the sun. His skin was golden brown, his lips full and definitely kissable. But, his eyes were what snared her attention. They were the brightest blue she had ever seen, bluer than the sky on a bright summer’s day.

Her eyes continued their perusal. His coat was unbuttoned, his shirt pulled taut against his broad chest. A belt with a large buckle cinched the jeans at his narrow waist. His legs were long but judging by how tight his pants hugged his thighs, they were also muscular. She sighed loudly. The man was more handsome than she’d dreamed despite the scar on his face. She swallowed hard and tentatively stepped towards him.

“Mr. Franklin, I’m Cora” Her voice was husky with nerves and she offered a shaky, gloved hand.

“But, the porter called you, Miss Brown.” John was confused, he ignored Cora’s hand and his beautiful blue eyes narrowed. “I assume you have an explanation. I can’t abide liars.”

The tone of his voice was more serious than angry but it still caused Cora to tremble and step back a pace. What if he didn’t understand and sent her back?

“Mr. Franklin, I promise I can explain if you give me a chance. Is there somewhere we can go and talk?”

John heard the pleading note in her voice and his annoyance settled. “Very well.” She was so beautiful it took his breath away. He couldn’t stay mad. He spun around and spoke to another man standing nearby. “Sam, can you get Miss Ancelet’s luggage to the wagon? I’ll take her to Lilly’s for tea so we can talk.”

“Sure thing, John. Henry, Frank and me will grab a drink at the saloon while we’re waiting.” Sam ambled away with the two other men.

John placed his arm on Cora’s elbow to escort her away. A jolt so powerful caused stars to dance in front of her eyes, she became breathless and stumbled. His arm whipped around her waist to steady her and he gazed into her eyes questioningly. Had he felt it too?

“Sorry,” she murmured. “I felt a little light headed. I must have been affected by the long journey.”

“No need to apologize.” His deep voice caressed her. “Maybe you need something to eat.”

They left the station arm in arm.

Mercy – Bride of Idaho

MercyBrideofIdaho_1

Mercy: Bride of Idaho (American Mail-Order Brides #43) by Jacquie Rogers debuted #1 on the Amazon Hot New Releases for Victorian Romance. This story takes place in 1890, which is five years after the Hearts of Owyhee series. In fact, Mercy: Bride of Idaho is sort of an epilogue to Much Ado About Mavericks (Hearts of Owyhee #4) which is set in September 1885.

About Owyhee County
Owyhee is the original anglicized spelling of Hawaii (blame Captain Cook) and is pronounced pretty much the same. Oh-WYE-hee. It was named after some Hawaiian fur trappers who were lost in the area (1818-19) and never found. Owyhee County only covers part of the area called Owyhee, which extends into eastern Oregon and northern Nevada.

PBPickins-Idaho43rdState

Mercy and Patience Eaton are from Lawrence, Massachusetts. Believe me, relocating to Owyhee County would’ve been a culture shock for Mercy. The land is larger and the population smaller. Much, much smaller.

Mercy: Bride of Idaho
(American Mail-Order Brides #43)

One woman bent on saving her family. One rancher determined to save his own heart. Is her love enough to save them all?

Mercy Eaton has come to Idaho to marry the man of her father’s choosing in order to help her family make ends meet back home. She just knows it’ll all work out. That’s what she’s told her sister and her traveling companions all the way from Massachusetts to Owyhee County, Idaho. Then she meets her groom. He’s seventy years old. She nearly faints.

Quill Roderick has no intention of marrying. Ever. As far as he’s seen, women leave—first his mother, then his great-aunt, then his first flame. Quill sees no reason to open his heart again, especially to some mail-order bride his crazy old uncle brought for him. But Mercy tempts him like no other with her unruly long red hair, sunshine smile, and the most alluring eyes he’s ever seen. Can he keep his heart barricaded from this dangerous fireball, or are her kisses the master key needed to unlock his heart to a whole new world… Love.

Twin sisters separated by war, bound by love…

After the death of their father, twin sisters Maggie and Matty Becker are forced to take positions with officers’ families at a nearby fort. When the southern states secede, the twins are separated, and they find themselves on opposite sides of America’s bloodiest war.

In the south, Maggie travels with the Hamiltons to Bellevue, a plantation in west Tennessee. When Major Hamilton is captured, it is up to Maggie to hold things together and deal with the Union cavalry troop that winters at Bellevue. Racism, politics and a matchmaking stepmother test Maggie’s resourcefulness as she fights for Bellevue, a wounded Confederate officer and the affections of the Union commander.

In the north, Matty discovers an incriminating letter in General Worthington’s office, and soon she is on the run. With no one to turn to for help, she drugs the wealthy Colonel Cole Black and marries him, in hopes of getting the letter to his father, the governor of Michigan. But Cole is not happy about being married, and Matty’s life becomes all about survival.

Matty

by Kat Flannery

Fort Wayne, Michigan
December 1862

What had she done? Matty Becker was going to hell, and there’d be no one to save her. A loud snore echoed from the other room. She peeked around the corner and caught a glimpse of Colonel Black’s stocking feet. She’d burn for sure. She glanced at the paper she held and groaned. She was a horrible, devious, scheming letch. Maggie wouldn’t be pleased. Maggie wasn’t here. Another snore blew into the kitchen and she placed her head onto the table banging her forehead twice. There was no turning back now.
Last night she’d pushed aside her conscience and let fear guide her. For her plan to work, she’d have to throw all sense to the dogs, not that she hadn’t done so already by following through with the blasted thing. She couldn’t fail now. If her family found out what she’d done they’d never forgive her. Worse yet, if Colonel Black found out she’d be locked behind bars, a fate far better than the one that got her in this mess to begin with.
She placed the paper on the table and went into the bedroom. Colonel Black lay on the bed with his clothes stripped off and tossed about the floor. He’d been out for nine hours and would wake any minute. Matty stood, pushed all thoughts of reason from her mind and removed her dress, corset and pantaloons. Her face heated and the room spun. He rolled over and she jumped into the bed next to him, pretending to sleep. She knew the moment he’d woken. The bed stilled and she couldn’t breathe the air was so stiff.
“What the hell?” He sat up and she knew the instant he saw her. “Son of a bitch.”
She felt his nudge once, twice and now a shove almost knocking her from the bed.
“Wake the hell up,” he growled.
She squeezed her eyes closed and willed strength into her soul so she could face the dark Colonel. She rolled over pretending to wipe the sleep from her eyes.
“Who are you?” He placed his head in his hands. She’d bet he had one heck of a headache.
“Your wife,” she said.
“The hell you are.” He shot out of bed without grabbing the sheet, and she averted her eyes.
“Please cover yourself.” She held up the sheet and he ripped it from her hand. “The marriage license is in the kitchen on the table if you do not believe me.”
