Mila
Secrets. Lies. Deception.
It’s all part of his vendetta, and so am I. He stole me, used me as one of his pawns by forcing me into a marriage I wanted no part of. I had to sign my name on the dotted line, and now he owns me…body, mind, and soul.
That’s why I ran. I had to escape the monster whose touch corrupted me. Break free from the man who seduced me, the beast who gave me a taste of the darkness.
But now I crave it. I need it. I need him.
I’m his to play with…until I break.
Saint
Distraction. Addictive. Toxic.
Mila wasn’t supposed to be anything more than a signature, a beautiful secret, a wife with no voice. Instead, she became an addiction, a complication that could cost me everything—a price I wasn’t willing to pay…until she ran from me.
Now, the game has changed, and the stakes are much higher. She thinks she’s seen the worst of me, convinced I couldn’t be more vicious and cruel. But I’m about to prove her wrong because I’ll risk everything to get what I want.
Revenge…and my wife.

Saint brought his lips to my ear and traced his tongue along the curve, causing me to shiver. “Don’t. Ever. Run from me again.”
This time, there was no trickery or falsehoods hidden behind his words fortified by an unspoken threat. And he didn’t need to say anything else to make me understand how serious he was. I heard it loud and clear and glanced at him over my shoulder. “Don’t ever again make me feel like I’m nothing but a whore to you.” I turned around to face him, my skirt still bunched up around my waist. “I am your wife, and a Russo wife deserves the respect of her husband.”
He slanted a dark brow. “Respect is earned, not demanded.”
“And neither is marriage, yet you demanded that.”
The edge of his mouth curved slightly, a subtle hint of amusement. “If I keep you,” he traced a gentle finger down my jaw, “will you continue to fight me?”
I leaned my head to the side, deeper into his touch. “With every breath.”
Seconds slipped into moments as we stood there staring at each other as if the world around us no longer existed. I didn’t know what it was, but something shifted between us. The barrier that kept us apart was slowly starting to crumble, and I wasn’t sure whether it thrilled me or scared me. What would we find once the barrier was destroyed and nothing but dust?

There was nothing tender about his kiss. It wasn’t loving, or caring, or an act to show affection. It was an act of hard passion to show ownership. To take and to mark, to make sure I knew who I belonged to.
Him.
He tore his lips from mine, his tongue lapping up what was left of our kiss. “I’m not done with you yet, segreto.”
“What do you mean?”
He sucked air through his teeth. “You ran from me. You think I’m going to let that go unpunished?”
Chills wracked through me at the memory of my last punishment. I could still feel the burn of leather on my flesh just thinking about it. “I’m not playing one of your sexual games, Saint.”
“Who says I’m playing?”
I stepped back, my lips tender from his fierce kiss. “If I asked you not to hurt me—”
“Don’t.”
“Don’t what?”
“Don’t ask me something I can’t give you.”
I frowned. “You can’t give me your word? A promise?”
He bit his lower lip, and the mask he always wore which kept me from reading his expression slipped back into place. “Not when it comes to hurting you.”
A car drove by, the sound intruding on the silence around us. Saint walked around the car and stopped at the driver-side door. “Get in the car, Mila.”
I looked his way. “You’re so sure you’re going to hurt me that you’re not even willing to give me your word that you won’t?”
There was no attempt from him to respond. He merely stared back at me, not giving me an answer I wanted to hear.
“I’m not like you.” I weaved my fingers together and turned to face him. “I’m not like you, Saint.”
“A fact I’m very much aware of.”
“Do you want me to be like you? Be someone who likes pain?”
“No.” He shook his head. “You have it all wrong. I don’t like pain. I only like inflicting it.”

MY EYES FLICKER OPEN when I hear a thump. The first thing I see are my hands still laced together over my stomach. When I lift my head, a dull pain resonates in my neck from staying in the same position for so long. Closing my eyes, I tilt my head back and twist it from side to side, loosening the muscles.
When I scoot my ass back in the seat, I notice the nurse call remote has fallen to the floor. I pick it up, then stand to wind it around one of the rails to keep it from slipping off again.
My body locks in place and my jaw damn near falls to the floor when I look at Jules. She’s lying there with her eyes wide fucking open looking at the ceiling. The first thing I notice is the brilliant color of her eyes. Just like in my dreams, they’re a bright golden amber. She blinks slowly a couple times. She must not see me, because she keeps looking at the ceiling like it’s the most fascinating thing she’s ever seen.
I hold still, not wanting to startle her, but also desperately wanting her eyes directed at me.
Swallowing to wet my suddenly dry throat, I murmur softly, “Jules.”
Her lips part. She blinks a couple more times before her head slowly turns in my direction. The minute her eyes lock on mine, a rush of air leaves my lungs. Fuck, but they are striking.
I don’t get a chance to enjoy her eyes being on me before they fill with fear. I frown, confused at the stark terror forming on her face. I reach out a hand to her to try to quell the fear but drop it when her lips tremble. Her hands clutch the sides of her head as her mouth opens and she lets out a god-awful scream. I stumble back a step and knock into the chair, stunned at her hysterical behavior. She starts thrashing on the bed, her legs kicking the blanket off her as she presses herself as close to the railing as she can to get away from me. The whole time, her wide eyes stay connected with my astonished ones, like she’s accusing me of something.
A nurse rushes in, and I numbly step to the side to give her room. Another rushes in seconds later with a doctor following closely behind. They both go to the other side of the bed.
“NO!” Jules screams over and over again, clutching her head. “NONONO!”
The ache in my chest that’s always present in my dreams is back, except it’s ten times worse. The pain I feel seeing her suffer in the flesh makes the pain of seeing her suffer in my dreams feel like a fucking paper cut. It’s agonizing and all-consuming and takes my damn breath away.
I want nothing more than to go to her, to hold her against me, and make all her fears go away, but it’s me she fears, and that thought tears me apart.
“Mr. Hendrix, I’m going to have to ask you to leave.”
I ignore the nurse trying to usher me out of the room. I can’t take my eyes off Jules as she fights the doctor and nurses. They yell back and forth to each other as they try to calm her down. I grow angry when they hold her down and stick a needle into her IV. I force my legs to hold still, instead of rushing over and yanking them away. I know they’re professionals and only trying to help her, but I still don’t fucking like it.
“Mr. Hendrix.” The nurse tries again, grabbing my arm. “Theo!”
It’s the use of my brother’s name that has me ripping my eyes away from the distraught girl in the bed. I stare down at the nurse, and her eyes soften in sympathy. “Please, just wait outside until the doctor calms down your wife and assesses her. He’ll come talk to you as soon as he can.”
I don’t correct her on her mistake of thinking I’m my brother. I just give her a stiff nod before looking back at Jules one more time. She’s no longer screaming due to the medicine now running through her veins, but her eyes are still on me. Tears fall from them, soaking the pillow beneath her head, and it makes me want to fall to my knees and scream.
Instead, with one final look and my chest feeling hollow, I turn on my heel and leave the room.

I told myself not to look up, not to see the hurt I knew was there, but I didn’t listen to the wimpy voice inside my mind. I listened to my heart and his voice instead. He was feet away, approaching with hesitation, and his hazel eyes were hauntingly void of the magnetic golden sparkle that beckoned my heart.
“Soph.” Jameson’s fingers wrapped around my shoulders, slowly shaking me to reality. He was crying. His eyes were moist, threatened by tears.
“I…I’m sorry.” I fell into him, my body crashing against his with such a force that we nearly tumbled onto the pavement. His arms tightened around my back, adhering us to one another. It was a bittersweet suffocation because I knew I still had to leave. I needed to breathe.
“Please don’t go,” he whispered above my head, lifting a palm to press my face against his chest. I was beginning to sniffle, more tears obstructing my vision, when I struggled to wiggle from his hold.
“Please let me,” I replied, lifting my head back to see his face. He had aged in the last hour alone, fearful, unsure, and lost. Just like me.
“Where are you going?”
“Somewhere.” I inhaled, absorbing what I could of him while tightly closing my eyes.
The soft crackling hum of his anxious voice flowed into my ears, torturing my confidence. “Let me come with you.”
“Not this time, Jameson.”
“At least let me take you somewhere so I know you’re safe.”
My head shook, a heavy sigh trembling from my lips. “Jameson?”
“Yes, Soph?”
“This might sound strange, but do you remember the first time we touched one another? Like when our hands…”
He interrupted me, his eyes knowingly scanning mine. “At school. I was leaving late because I had to finish an art project and you wouldn’t let me drive you home. I tried to take your hand. And…yes, I remember.”
“The feeling?”
“Yes.” He nodded, swallowing in anticipation of my words.
My lungs slowly steadied, only a few ragged hiccup breaths dribbled from my throat. I blew some air out, steadying my nerves before continuing. “I can’t forget it. It’s like an electric current that just runs through my body now, like it’s part of my bloodstream and part of some system that keeps me…”
“Alive.” His expression softened, comprehending my words entirely.
“And,” I continued, blushing through my damp cheeks, “when you promised youd keep away my nightmares, the first time you spent the night in my room. You let me sleep on you when you barely knew me.”
“I wanted to know you. I told you that, Soph.” Jameson released his hold around my body and lifted his hands to my face, cupping my cheeks tightly. “You broke down my walls, Sophia Reid. I can’t move forward without you as my foundation. I won’t.”
