Duke Du Jour

DUKE DU JOUR

Lords in Time series, Book 1

by Petie McCarty

Genre: Regency Time-Travel Romance

Publisher: The Wild Rose Press

Jared Langley, present-day Duke of Reston, tumbles into an abandoned fountain on his ducal estate and travels back in time to the year 1816. There, Reston servants and local villagers think him a dead ringer for his namesake and rakehell ancestor—the seventh Duke of Reston, gone missing at the Battle of Waterloo. Unfortunately, Seven got mixed up with French spies out to assassinate the Duke of Wellington, and an unwary Jared ends up in their crosshairs.

Lady Ariana Hart has loved Jared Langley, the seventh Duke of Reston, since she was twelve years old, until the night the rogue broke her heart. Given up for dead, her rakish neighbor makes a miraculous return from Waterloo—only Jared shows up a changed man and reignites all the feelings Ariana had long ago buried.

Jared is in a race against time. He must waylay the suspicions of his quirky servants and neighbors, get to Wellington before the French spies do, fix his fountain—before Seven shows up—so Jared has a way home, and definitely not fall in love with the irresistible Lady Ariana.

“Did I hurt you?” he asked, as he pulled the boot free.

“No!” she blurted.

His gaze swung up to her face, and she forced a smile. The boot removal had affected her as much as him. How would he ever make it through the night? He frowned slightly and then set to work on the other boot, holding her other knee and reigniting the heart palpitations all over again.

She made another swipe at the coverlet with her palms and almost fell over sideways. He fought back a grin. Misery loved company, and the sight of her flushed cheeks and bright eyes caught his breath in his throat.

Jared straightened and placed the second boot by the first next to the bed. “Are you feeling all right? You look a bit flushed. Maybe the ride was too much for you.”

He leaned in and placed the back of his hand against her forehead, ostensibly to check for a fever, and she whimpered at his touch. The intimate sound had his mouth feeling dry as sand, and he desperately wanted to touch more than her forehead.

His gaze locked with hers. Her eyes darkened.

Oh no. This could be trouble. A misstep here could ruin her…Or keep me here forever.

Still he did not move his hand. His gaze held hers. “You feel warm.”

He heard his voice go low and raspy.

Great. Let her know she has the upper hand.

Was she warm or was he? Every vein and artery in his body pulsed with the need he had denied since the day he’d met her.

“I’m fine,” she said softly.

He had to fight this magnetism, or he would have her ruined in short order.

“Are you?” He leaned closer.

Her look of befuddlement tugged at his heart, and he fought the lust roiling in his chest. He couldn’t read the look in her eyes. Did she want him, too? Oh, what did it matter unless he kissed her?

She leaned forward, whispered, “I think so.”

“Let me check.” He pressed his lips to hers.

Every nerve ending in his body exploded with pleasure. Primal desire had overwhelmed him in the taproom after he had saved her from the drunken farmer, his primitive nature taking the lead.

My lady. Mine.

He had not thought twice. Jumped in like the knight in shining armor she raved on about. He had wanted to be her knight.

His lips did not plunder, as she no doubt expected. He gentled his kiss so as not to frighten her, locked together in this room as they were. He brushed his lips across hers, caressed, hoping to make her want him half as much as he wanted her. He leaned back to stare into her eyes. He shouldn’t have started this. He would not be able to stop.

“This way lies disaster,” he rasped, “for both of us.”

“Maybe,” she said breathlessly, “but could I please have another?”

Birthday Bash – Historical

Magic of Books Promotions hosted its first tour during the month of November three years ago.

The company was created from the passion and desire of its owner, Tami Adams, because of her experiences as an author. From her struggles to have her books viewed and appreciated she knew there had to be another way.

Three years later Tami no longer writes but is determined to show the world the magic that lies within the pages of all books.

The following authors are helping Magic of Books to celebrate its birthday. Enjoy.

Message from Tami:

The last three years have been an incredible journey. I’ve made so many friends who began as bloggers, readers, and authors. I have been privileged to present and showcase new and old books from seasoned and new authors. I’ve learned so much I didn’t even realize I should know prior to getting into this business. And after three years I can honestly say I’m still learning, I’m still growing, and I’m still making friends. I love and appreciate all of you who have supported my little slice of heaven. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

“You like being a baker?” He asked with genuine curiosity and surprise.

“Well, the hours are atrocious, but do I like making my own way? The answer is yes. I make the decisions and there is no one to tell me what I am doing is wrong. It is a good feeling.”

“You know, it is possible to depend on someone and not be frightened they would ridicule you.”

She turned then and looked up at him. Was he saying he would never ridicule her? “I think it is human nature for a man to always question a woman’s decision.” They had made their way to the folly which she hadn’t realized was overgrown with vines affording its occupants with complete privacy. He was calculating, she would give him that.

“Two people can have differing views on a topic without ridicule. I have seen it.” He helped her sit on the bench, then propped his booted foot on the seat next to her and rested his arm on his raised knee leaning down to face her. “If the two people see each other as equals it can work. Just like two business partners.”

“Do you truly feel that marriage is a business venture?” She asked all innocent. She gave him her best card face hoping not to give away the importance of his answer. He studied her face. She knew he guessed his answer couldn’t be so simple as a yes, or no. After several moments he attempted to answer.

“Well, I think that anytime two individuals are joined in a common goal, that yes they must treat each other as a partner. I daresay the benefits far outweigh most business ventures. Unfortunately, I can’t answer past that, because I have never spent much time considering what a marriage would entail, until now. I am terribly out of my element here. You lived in a home with both parents for some time what say you?” He had answered her question in such a way that he didn’t answer it at all. Blast!

Birds chirped as they jumped among the vines of their haven. The air seemed heavy and warm. More like a summer day than spring. He waited. She knew she couldn’t answer him using her own parents, because she would never want what they had. She would not accept anything but a love match. Instead she spoke of the one example she had. The baker and his wife who took her in when she needed it most.

“I do know something of how a true marriage can work. It was not a Ton marriage. The two people were a team as you said. They worked together every day listening to each other, but it was more than that. You couldn’t see it or even explain it, but it was how they looked at each other. How they spoke to one another even when they were disagreeing. I think it was very rare, and possibly unattainable.”

He shifted and turned to walk to the other side of the gazebo leaving a cool breeze in his wake, making her shiver.

“You are talking of a love match?” he asked with his back turned to her. She couldn’t read anything in his words.
