Excerpts from Aries (The Ring Of Twelve Series Book 1)
Excerpt #1 (120 Words)
He had been the sniper for his platoon, providing ground support as they advanced in their mission to re-take and hold the city. From his eagle-eye point of view, he could see up and down the street where two-by-two troops were going door-to-door checking for insurgents when a woman came toward them with a child in tow. Both raised their hands, but something seemed a bit off to him. Neither the woman nor the child walked with a normal gait as if something was preventing a natural stride. He put the scope on them and could see bulges on their bodies where there shouldn’t be any, and he was convinced they were unwilling suicide bombers sent by insurgents to kill and maim US and Coalition troops. His captain was shouting in their native language, commanding them to stop, but they kept walking forward, shaking their heads. The woman’s hand moved to the right, but the child froze. They were six meters – about 20 feet – away when he took the shot. The woman, then the girl, dropped dead where they stood.
Excerpt #2 (209 words)
He looked down, then up at her, and smiled. It had been a long time since he’d been with a woman.
“Well, I was wondering if you could give me a hand here.”
“Sure, I’d be, um, happy to. Right this way, Aubrey.”
She led him toward an obscure corner.
“There are no cameras here.”
“Good to know,” he said as he felt his pants unzip.
She gasped at the surprise that sprung out at her and felt weak in the knees as she wrapped her hands around him. Muffled sounds of passion escaped both, and moments later, she whispered in his ear.
“I need to clean up,” she said, licking the remnants off her lips. “Wait for me downstairs.”
Then she disappeared into the women’s restroom as he headed into the men’s room to readjust his clothing, then went downstairs to wait for her. He watched her come down the stairs trying to look as normal as possible but failing. She spotted him and then headed toward him.
“Anytime you need help, just let me know. I’ll be glad to do what I can to help you. Come again.”
“Thank you. I will keep that in mind. Have a nice afternoon,” Aubrey said as he left the library.

My heart, the one I was beginning to piece back together, shatters all over again into fragments I don’t know if I’ll ever find again. How could Dean keep this from me? I open the box and see a gorgeous ring nestled inside. Tears fall as I sit back against the wall. I don’t know if they’re from sadness at the hole in my heart I thought was healing, or from anger toward the man I thought I trusted…thought I loved. The one I’ve been ready to risk everything for.
I hear his footsteps, but I don’t look up. “How could you do this to me?” I ask as soon as he’s in earshot.
“What?” he asks in a worried voice. He steps inside the closet and freezes, all the color drains from his face making the dark circles under his eyes more obvious than before. “Sweetheart—”
“No! You don’t get to call me sweetheart right now. This is…this is low, even for you.” I finally find the strength to stand. He looks as if I stabbed him in the heart, shock evident on his face, his lips parted slightly. The sight makes me hesitate, but what about how him hiding this makes me feel?
“How long have you had this?” I ask clutching the sheet to my chest as I hold the ring box and letter up so he can see.
“Briella…” His chest rises and falls carefully as if he’s controlling his breathing.
I stare at him while tears drip off my wobbling chin. As he continues to stare at me silently, I lose my temper. “You know what, don’t say anything. There isn’t anything you could say right now to fix this.”
I brush past him, careful not to touch him. He doesn’t even try to stop me; he simply stares in the closet as I move around behind him. I go in the kitchen and gather my clothes. How could I be so blind? I should’ve known he hasn’t changed. He doesn’t take love…or me, seriously for one second. I’m convenient for him right now.
I find my phone and call Brittney. “Hey. I’m at Dean’s house and I need you to come get me.” I sniff, trying—and mostly losing—to keep more tears from falling.
“Are you okay?” she asks.
“No, just please come now.” I rattle off his address and stand by the door to watch for her.
Dean finally walks into the kitchen with his eyes cast down at the floor, seemingly defeated. “Briella, let me take you to Valley B. I don’t want you somewhere you won’t be safe.”
“No. I’m not going anywhere with you. As soon as Britt’s here, I’m leaving,” I say as I swipe away another tear.
He finally glances up at me with his own, red-rimmed eyes. “Briella, please. Don’t go. Please give me a chance to explain.”
“Dean, you’ve had plenty of chances to tell me about this and to explain. But you haven’t. How could I be so stupid?” I laugh humorlessly.
He comes closer and attempts to reach for me. “Bree…”
I press against the door. “Don’t touch me.” My voice cracks.
He drops his hands and looks so broken I almost want to wrap him in a hug and tell him it’ll be okay, but it isn’t. He lied by omission. He kept something important from me. Love isn’t filled with secrets and half-truths.
Moments later, headlights flash through the window and Brittney texts me she’s outside. I turn to open the door.
He tries again. “Please, baby. Let me explain this to you. I love you so much. I can’t lose you now, not when I finally stand a chance with you.” He slides behind me and turns me so I’m facing him. “I told you to hold on to me, Bree, to not let go. I’ve always told you that, and I know I don’t always get it right but I’m holding on to you. I won’t let go. I promised you.”
I step out of reach. “You don’t have a choice, because I’m letting go. I can’t hold on to someone who doesn’t tell me the truth even if it will hurt me. I guess my brother knew you better than I did after all. He said you’d break my heart, and you did. Except he doesn’t know this isn’t the first time.”
“Briella, I know I hurt you all those years ago, but I’m begging you not to go. That’s not what this is, I promise. We can talk through this if you’ll just stay and let me explain.” He looks so panicked, his eyes pleading with me.
“Goodbye, Dean. Take care of yourself.” I run quickly to Brittney’s car, and even though I shouldn’t, I look at him before I get in and see the tears streaming down his handsome face making me doubt myself. But the truth is in front of me; he betrayed me by keeping this from me. I guess the real truth is, we were always meant to be just friends. Now, I’m not sure if we can even be that.

“So, you’re from New York?” I ask.
She fidgets with her bracelet. “Jersey, actually. My uncle lived in New York.”
“Ah. You don’t look like a Jersey girl.”
“What does a Jersey girl look like? And please tell me you’re not basing that comment on Jersey Shore or the show with the housewives?” She leans forward, and I strain to keep my eyes from drifting to her chest.
I raise a hand. “Guilty of Jersey Shore. I went to Italy one summer and caught a stomach bug. It confined me to my room for two days. It was the only thing on TV I could understand. Macaroni Rascals is what they call them there. I don’t know what was worse, the pain of the stomach bug or the one from watching them.”
She laughs, this time with her whole mouth, and it’s so contagious my lips follow along. She looks less lethal when she smiles, even as the top of her chest shakes.
I lean closer to her. “So, tell me what real Jersey girls are like.”
“Confident, tough. We can get down when it counts. We don’t pump our own gas, but that’s because we know how to let people treat us like we deserve.”
I find myself smiling harder. “Oh, is that right? I always thought it was because of the self-service ban…”
She shakes her a slow and delicate finger. “Clearly, you know nothing about Jersey girls. I’ll need to educate you.”
God, please do.

“My guys and I will start unloading the truck. When we’re finished you can tell me when you’re going to make my dreams come true.” Dom wiggles his eyebrows like the lecherous man he has a reputation for being and struts back toward the exit. He bends down to prop both of the doors open, and when he straightens up, he grins at me. “I can’t believe I’m going to have sex with Bobbi Lee.”
“I never said I’d sleep with you,” I shout as he steps outside.
Tyson nods at Dom before he enters the office. “Are you exchanging sex for furniture?” One side of his mouth arches upward.
“No. God, no.” I shake my head. “I promised to go on a date with him if he could deliver the goods today.”
“And you’ll deliver the goods on the date?” he teases.
I give him my best “fuck off” look before I remember he’s my new boss and compose myself. “Dom grew up in the same neighborhood as me. He’s asked me out a hundred times and I’ve always said no.”
“Until today?” He raises a dark brow.
“Yeah. But you see, I’ve got this new boss I’m trying to impress… so I finally agreed.”
He nods. “I like your resourcefulness.”
“Thank you.” I don’t know why his compliment pleases me so much.
“Where are you going on your date?”
“Oh… I’m hoping I can find a way to avoid going out with him.”
“So, you lied to him?”
My lips wrap around my teeth. “Umm, yeah. I guess there’s no way to sugarcoat it.” I shrug.
“Resourceful and not afraid to lie or snoop. You might be my ideal employee.”
I stand there preening under his praise until I remember those aren’t considered to be positive qualities for most people.
