Inside the castle in a room far away from the exit, the pack of wolves watched the group with hunger in their eyes. Ionan looked around nervously, eyeing the clothes that were scattered along the floor.
“The big one’s a Changer,” a large black male whispered to a silver colored female at his side.
“So he is,” the female replied, licking her paw clean. “I’ve never had Changer before.”
“Wonderful catch, Carmilla. I knew we could count on you for dinner,” a white and black female said softly, wagging her tail.
“It was nothing Iris,” Carmilla responded proudly.
“Darling, why don’t you ever call me Mother anymore? It breaks my heart,” Iris said with a voice that was sickly sweet.
“You may have made me, Iris, but you will never be my mother,” Carmilla said, eyeing Kia.
“What’s going on here?” Kia asked, her voice cracking nervously.
The wolves around them snickered as the head female grinned. “I’m surprised you haven’t figured it out yet,” Iris said, snatching a purple velvet dress from the floor and throwing it into air.
Her body twisted and contorted into that of a human and the dress slipped easily over her head as she transformed. Her hair was black with streaks of white running through it, her eyes a sharp gold color. “We’re the predators and you’re the prey,” she smiled.
“Wait, you’re…” Kia choked on her own words.
“Ortusans,” Iris said, her voice dripping with poison. The group watched in horror as the twenty or so wolves changed, tossing on their clothes as easily as Iris and staring at the group eagerly.
The Ortusan called Iris smiled at them devilishly. “Get them.”

The few conversations Kenzie and I had were nothing more than a personal comfort to me. I spoke to him like I used to, with utter honesty and blind trust. Yet today I was having a hard time even opening the door that led to his cell.
This was different. This wasn’t personal, it was business. And it was necessary.
I released a long breath, pushed open the door, and walked down the long, cold hallway. I paused at the corner where I usually sat against the cement wall before I took another step and rounded the bend.
He had heard me coming. He was leaning against the wall with his free hand pressed against the cold cement. His head whipped up, and his hand dropped as I came into view.
I hadn’t seen him since the day he almost killed me. I hadn’t looked into his eyes since I thought it was the last time. They were the same blue I remembered. They still lingered on me with a hint of something familiar before he pushed away from the wall and moved to the back corner of his small cell.
His hair was longer than before and stuck up all over the place like he’d just woken up. Stubble grew on his usually smooth face. He looked older, worn and tired.
His left hand was tucked behind his back, but I could still see it. The thick metal casing that surround his hand into a tight fist was hard to miss, even though he tried to hide it. He couldn’t hurt me, not with his powers anyways, yet I couldn’t help the involuntary shiver that went down my spine.
The rapid beating of my heart and the warmth in my core had me take a step closer to the bars.
“Why are you here?” Kenzie asked. His suspicious gaze told me he knew this wasn’t a usual visit.
“We need some information, and it’s time you start talking.” I shoved my hands into my pockets to keep them from reaching out to him. He was so close.
“I’ve told you before, I can’t tell you anything. Even if I wanted to, I can’t.” He shook his head.
“It’s been weeks. Coleman is a long ways away. Shouldn’t the hold have worn off by now?” I asked. That was how it worked the first time, or at least that’s what Kenzie had told me. Maybe that was a lie too.
His eyes flickered up to me with a cold glare. “He’s made some…upgrades.” His words were like venom on his lips as he spoke. “I can’t tell you where he is. I can’t tell you what he is going to do. All I can tell you is to run. Get the hell away from here as far as you can. Because he will be back, and you cannot beat him; not with the army you’ve got.”
I was shaking my head before he’d even finished. “You know I can’t do that.”
His eyes dropped again. “Yes…I know. You’re a fool. You all are.”
“How many? How many Carbons does he have?” I tried to turn his attention back to giving me some sort of information, anything that could help us.
He let out a menacing chuckle, and the hint of a smile that wasn’t his own spread at the side of his mouth. “Thousands. Hundreds of thousands.”
I tried to not let my shock show. “When will he be back?”
Kenzie shrugged. “Today, tomorrow. There’s no telling when he’ll be back.”
“But you said he was dying. You said he was infected with a virus of some sort. Maybe he’s weak. Maybe—”
“He was dying, and then you gave him the one thing that could save him.” Kenzie’s voice rose as he pushed himself away from the wall and stepped into the middle of the cell. “He’ll be back. And he’ll be stronger. And this time, he won’t stop until every last one of you are dead.”
“Let him try. We’ve won before.” I tried to sound more confident than I felt as I shifted on my feet.
“You think that was his worst?” Kenzie took another step forward as his head tilted to the side with a sneer. “Your mother and I convinced him to only bring a few. We tried to contain the damage as much as we could. Why do you think so many of your men were running in the wrong direction when we arrived? You think your maps just accidentally showed the wrong trajectory?”
My throat bobbed, and I couldn’t look away from his piercing stare. He took another step forward. I was frozen.
“I did what I could to spare you, to spare innocent people from a fate that is still coming. One they can’t just hide from this time.” His free hand gripped onto the bar as he leaned in so close that I felt his breath on my cheek and saw the fire in his eyes. “Our fates have already been written, Sawyer. And I can’t run from it any more than you can. I can’t change who I am, what I am. And you can’t stop him.”
My eyes narrowed. I shook my head. “I don’t believe that. I will win, we will win.” I wrapped my fingers around his, still tightly clinched around the bar.
He flinched as he glanced down at them.
“You can fight this. You’ve done it before, and I believe you can do it again.”
Slowly, his gazed moved up to meet mine, and for a moment it was just Kenzie and I again. No one and nothing else mattered in that moment, just us.
He slowly drew away his hand, but he didn’t move away. He reached through the bar toward me. His calloused hand brushed against my cheek and slid down to cup my chin. He pulled me a little closer. His eyes flickered to my mouth and then back to my eyes again.
His hand slid down my neck, and his thumb gently caressed the soft skin under my chin. Heat rose to my cheeks, and my heart was beating so fast—too fast.
His eyes narrowed. “You put your faith in the wrong people.” And then he squeezed his hand tight around my throat.

Saving Grace

SAVING GRACE

by Aubrey Wynne

Genre: Contemporary Romantic Suspense with Historical elements

Narrator: Sara K. Sheckells

audio cover

A tortured soul meets a shattered heart…

Chloe Hicks’ life consisted of an egocentric ex-husband, a pile of bills, and an equine business in foreclosure until a fire destroys the stable and her beloved ranch horse. What little hope she has left is smashed after the marshal suspects arson. She escapes the accusing eyes of her hometown, but not the memories and melancholy.

Jackson Hahn, Virginia Beach’s local historian, has his eyes on the mysterious new woman in town. When she arrives in Pungo, he is struck by her haunting beauty and the raw pain in her eyes. Her descriptions of the odd events happening in her bungalow pique his curiosity.

The sexy historian distracts Chloe with the legend of a woman wrongly accused of witchcraft. She is drawn to the story and the similarities of events that plagued their lives. Perhaps the past can help heal the present. But danger lurks in the shadows…

Chapter 1January, 2006
Four Seasons Riding Stable
Chloe sat straight up, willing the fog in her head to dissipate. The bed sheets were twisted around her ankles. Sweat trickled down her back. The terror froze her limbs while she struggled to calm her thudding heart and listen for the sound all horse owners dread. But it was the smell that made her realize this was not a terrible dream.Smoke.Instinct took over and she scrambled from the four-poster, making a beeline for the back door and the barn. Her toe smacked against the corner of a wall as her eyes adjusted to the darkness. Oh god, not my babies. Not Bunny. Panic weighed down her legs as her bare feet hit the gravel. Everything seemed to move in slow motion. She tried to run down the long driveway, her eyes riveted to the red-orange flames shooting up into the black sky. Paul emerged from the darkness, his face colored yellow from the fiery glow. He signaled for her to take the front of the building as he disappeared around the back. The frigid night air slapped her awake, but a horrifying screech from a panicked horse kicked in her adrenaline. Chloe reached the big, sliding doors and tugged them open. Heat smacked her face, and the smoke assaulted her lungs. Coughing, tears running down her cheeks, she slid back the bolts and opened the stall doors. On the other side, Paul’s voice faintly reached her over the crackle that filled her ears.“Hiya! Move it, move it.”The fire had consumed the other half of the barn where the arena was located. Above her was the loft, filled with winter hay and the last of her savings, now adding fuel to the already intense blaze. She pushed the thought from her mind as the flames shot through the center of the alleyway and the arena caved in.Grabbing one of the lead ropes that hung at each door, she smacked the first horse on the rump and sent him flying out of the barn. The first three horses on each side followed their stable mates into safety with little persuasion. But Duchess, her mother’s old mare, wouldn’t budge. Chloe threw the lead rope over her neck and forced a calm tone. “Easy, girl. That’s my girl. Walk on, now. Walk on.”The old horse snorted and pranced but followed her out of the stall. When they neared the opening, she withdrew the rope and whacked Duchess’ hindquarters. With a leap, the horse disappeared into the gray haze. The acrid odor of scorched hair and burnt wood filled her nostrils. Embers popped and her cheek blistered. She wiped at it with her shoulder as she led two more horses out by hand.Crack!Above them, a beam gave way and formed a fiery V. The horses must have sensed it also because they lunged ahead, snapping Chloe’s shoulders forward. She struggled to maintain her balance but fell to the matted floor, her knees striking the hard rubber. A boom behind her sent a spray of sparks, and pain shot along her backside. From the corner of her eye, she saw a strand of her hair spark. Frantically, she beat at it with her bare hand, putting it out on her neck. The heat was sweltering now. Images wavered in the flames that licked at the dry timbers of the remaining stalls and the heavy beams above.Scrambling to her feet, Chloe ran outside into the frigid night and stumbled down the drive to help Paul. As she reached the other side of the barn, she doubled over as a coughing spasm racked her body. Hands on her knees, gasping to pull air into her tight chest, she heard Paul yelling over the crackle and whinnies.“Bunny won’t leave the stall, and won’t let me near her foal.”“What about Jack?”“He’s good. C’mon, the roof is gonna give.”His hand tightened around her arm and pulled with such force her feet almost left the ground. Plunging back into the smoking hell, they entered Bunny’s stall and found the foal in the corner.“Paul, I’ll get the foal then Bunny will follow.”Another loud snap from above. She grabbed the lead rope dangling from the horse’s halter and handed it to the trainer. Running a palm down her mare’s neck, she spoke soothingly, “Atta girl, Bunny. There’s my girl. Let’s your get your baby out of here.” The mare’s ears perked at her voice and words. Chloe tossed a rope around the foal’s neck and pulled. The baby gave to the pressure and followed Chloe out.Behind her, a loud, splintering crash was followed by a shrill squeal. Her stomach twisted as she turned to see her trainer pulling at the lead rope. A fiery beam pinned Bunny as she thrashed, her legs flying in the air. One hoof caught the man in the head, and he crumpled to the ground.Fighting for air, her chest a tight ball of agony, Chloe stumbled back in and grabbed Paul under his arms. She dragged him with the last of her strength and shuffled backwards until her feet tripped on something solid. She fell, his body tangled in her legs as they both landed with a thud. A sob ripped at her raw throat at the sound of a muffled shriek. Tears spilled down her burning cheeks as she shook the lifeless body on top of her. Chloe collapsed hand rested on Paul’s chest, finding hope in the slight rise and fall of his shallow breathing. In the back of her brain, the sound of sirens wailed before the world went black.

“Detective, are you okay?”
The soft, but urgent voice caressed Brian Barnes as it echoed through his brain. It called to him, soothing his soul like wisps of cool touches across his fevered skin. He needed to see who it belonged to. He had to open his eyes.
His muscles tensed and fire tore through his side, burning and stealing his breath, as Brian pushed back to consciousness. Automatically he wanted to reach toward the pain, but he couldn’t move his arm. His groan rumbled as the agony in his gut radiated out over his entire body.
“Oh, come on, don’t do that.” The voice again, but this time it wobbled like she was about to cry. “When you try to move, you bleed more. Come on, Brian, listen to my voice. Hold still. I don’t want you to bleed to death, just open your eyes so I know you aren’t going to die and I’m not alone here.”
He had to follow the compulsion of her voice. Disappointing her wasn’t an option, not with that voice pulling at him. Slowly his eyes fluttered open.
A vision of the beautiful Toni swam in front of him. Why was she crying? What happened? A blistering pain shuddered across his torso and reality came flooding back. He’d come over to Pete’s house because he thought something was wrong. His instincts had been right, but the reality of the situation was so much worse than he’d ever imagined. He refocused on Toni and the bruises marring her face and arms.
She was dating Pete and right now she looked so freaking scared. But who could blame her since her boyfriend, his friend, had gone bat-shit insane. How had he missed all the signs that the cop and the man who’d been his friend had lost all touch with sanity? He hadn’t seen it until today. So now he sat here on the floor with a gunshot to his gut and two women in terrible danger. If Toni was here, somewhere Julie, her friend, and the focus of Pete’s obsession, had to be here too. Somehow, he had to get them both out before Pete hurt them.
“Toni…are you okay?” Goddamn, even breathing hurt. Black spots danced before his eyes as another wave of pain crashed over him. He moaned.
“Shh, I’m fine. He didn’t want to hurt me.” She strained to look down at him from her position on the bed and her face paled even more. “Oh God, you’re bleeding so much. We’ve got to get you out of here.”
He didn’t even have to look down to know how bad it truly was. He couldn’t feel anything below the radiating pain in his gut anymore. Blood soaked everything. The cold seeping over him was definitely not a good sign, but he wasn’t going to freak her out even more by telling her that. She needed to get to safety.
He took a shallow breath and focused to take stock of the room.
Pete shot him and then dragged him to this bedroom and cuffed him to the leg of a heavy armoire. The gunshot to his gut was why everything hurt so fucking bad.
It was hard to tell from where he was at on the floor, but it looked like Toni was handcuffed to the bedframe. As he watched her, she wiggled.
“What,” he gasped, “are you doing?”
Her torso twisted. “I’m trying to get my charm bracelet off.”
Okay, Brian knew his brain wasn’t functioning at full capacity, but why was she worried about her jewelry right now?
His question must have showed on his face because she gave him a wink. “I have a handcuff key on it. Think about what that means for a moment instead of what’s happening here.”
Her mischievous look and the reality of their situation were at complete odds, but the reason why she had a key like that hit him and he couldn’t help but find the humor. He gave a bark of laughter which morphed into a moan when his gut clenched. It took a moment to get his breath back. “You wear a…” he breathed through the black spots and nausea, “handcuff key on your bracelet?”
Her chagrined smile took his breath away and this time it had nothing to do with the gunshot wound in his gut. She was so beautiful, even roughed up and messy like she was now. Her auburn curly hair fell over her eyes. She kept blowing it to move it out of her face. The urge to touch it, to run his fingers across those curls, pulled at him. He instantly regretted that this would be the last time he’d see her.
The numbness spread along with the pool of blood below him. He had a feeling that he wouldn’t wake up again when the unconsciousness, creeping at the edge of his brain, overtook him this time.
“Got it!” Toni raised her freed hand in victory and rushed over to his side clutching the key. At the same time a muffled scream echoed throughout the house.
Her frantic eyes met his as she fumbled with his cuffs. “That’s Julie,” she whispered.
He wasn’t going to be any help to her now. He was too far-gone. At this point, he’d just endanger and slow her down. She had to get out of the house.
“Toni, you can’t help me.”
She stilled for a moment, squeezing her eyes shut. When she re-opened them, resolve shone through their turquoise depths. He had to use that to get her to safety.
“Get out. Go get help.”
“I can’t leave you here.”
Another scream sounded out.
“Do you know how to shoot?” He winced as another arc of pain shot through him.
She gave a frantic nod.
“There’s a gun inside my right pant leg. Get it out and help her. Do whatever you have do, Toni, to get both of you out of here safely.”
She fumbled for a moment with his pant leg and rose up on her knees with the gun firmly in her grasp.
“That a girl.”
Their eyes met for a moment before she leaned down, gently brushed the hair off his forehead, and gave him a soft, light kiss on the cheek. “I’ll be right back. Don’t die.” The fierceness in her voice was a powerful thing, but he had a feeling he didn’t have much say about it anymore.
As she crept out of the room, the cold of his body swamped him.
A gunshot rang out over the house and then eerie silence ensued.
Black dots encroached over his vision.
His job was to protect.
He’d failed.

Working the Count

WORKING THE COUNT

by Jeanine Binder

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Working the count (definition) – When a batter is patient in his at-bats and tries to get “ahead in the count” or to get a pitch that he can hit hard.

Montero Salazaar was a master of this in his private life. He was always looking for the home run and never the strike out; contrary to how he wanted things to go when he was in a game. Being a major league pitcher only helped to enhance the number of girls wanting him in their bed and he knew how to lay down the smooth line at the exact right time. His life was an open book – at thirty-two years old, he had all the time in the world to play and have fun, making his presence known on every tabloid imaginable. Each day brought the promise of a new encounter, leaving him sated and satisfied without having to look in the rearview mirror.

But then came Casey and his aunt, Annie. Being with her, he felt like he had been doused with a vat of ice water and now wide awake – looking at life (and love) so differently. Montero wasn’t used to women who weren’t throwing themselves at him and how could Annie be changing him so dramatically? And why was he suddenly more interested in spending an afternoon coaching an eight-year-old with baseball tips than finding someone to spend a sexy night with?

Was this his one chance for love rather than being destined for one-nighters? Can he really change and make himself a solid person for Annie to love? Or were his teammates right and this would all blow over like a late-night storm with no true love in sight?

“What’s up?” Montero asked cautiously, setting his phone back down on the locker floor, looking the guys over to make sure they didn’t have anything to spray him with, or dump on him. Practical jokes were a way of life in the locker room and you had to always keep your guard up. All four of these guys were ganging up on him – all bets were off. He knew they had an agenda of some kind.

“Salley,” Mike Robbins, the first baseman started. “Salley” was the nickname his team all called him as a joke, which didn’t bother him. Some of his teammates had worse nicknames and he knew they’d thought they were being cute by giving him a girl’s name. “You’re up to something and we want to know what. You know you can’t keep secrets from us.”

“I have no idea what you guys are talking about,” he retorted, but couldn’t hold back the smile on his face. He knew he should keep a poker face, but something inside wanted to tell his team the truth. He was feeling good about his relationship and he felt he could talk about it openly. Now might be the opening he’d been waiting for.

Mike pointed his finger at him in an accusing manner. “That’s what I’m talking about. Look at that shit-eating grin on your face. Give it up, Sal. What have you done?”

Montero wavered, going over the pros and cons in his mind, whether to tell them about Annie. He was still surprised at the whole relationship himself and he knew he was in for an onslaught of teasing from his teammates once he came clean with them. But he didn’t have a clever way to dodge the situation and figured they’d all have to know sometime. He took a deep breath and blew it out, facing his teammates and swallowed once before starting. “Well, I sort of have… a girlfriend.”

There was silence for a moment then the four guys around him just burst into laughter. The kind that makes your eyes water and your stomach hurt. Montero watched patiently as they all dropped either onto the bench beside him or onto the floor – the hoots of their amusement making him wish he’d just kept his mouth shut. It was inevitable they would find out and he’d figured he’d take the easy way out by telling them, but from the sound of things, that was even going to go south on him. He wasn’t finding their laughter very amusing, trying to be tolerant until they were finished. He knew this was coming but still…

“Not sure what’s so funny,” Montero interrupted.

“That has to be the best thing I have heard all week,” David answered. David Ruston was a reliever – usually brought in at the seventh inning to carry on for the starting pitcher, and had followed Montero on the field more times than he could count. “Montero Salazaar with only one woman – Salley, I can’t get my head around that thought. And I know this has just got to be some whim you’re on. A dare someone made? Or a bet…that’s it. Someone is paying you to do this…”

“No one’s paying me to do anything and it’s not any kind of bet,” Montero said, fixing David with a stare. “This is a whole new world for me. I haven’t been to a club or out with another woman in almost three months. Tell me that isn’t serious, thank you very much.”

Mike nudged David in the ribs. “She must be a hot tamale in bed then.”

The guys all went back off in another fit of laughter. Montero stood up, finishing getting dressed. He was too tired and cranky to continue feeding their amusement. He’d earned every bit of their disbelief and harassment, but he didn’t need to have it all tonight and he wasn’t interested in taking anymore. “Laugh it up guys,” he said, finally. “If you want to see for yourself, get off your asses and come down to Riverside Ball Park at four tomorrow. You can meet her and then you’ll see I’m legit.”

Just as he got to the locker room door, he heard Mike’s voice behind him. “It won’t last, Salley. You don’t have the moxy to commit to just one woman. I give it another couple of weeks at most – things will be back to normal. I’ll even put a C-Note on it.”

Hearts and Beaus

HEARTS AND BEAUS

A Collection of Love Stories

Genre: Clean Contemporary Romance

Cover-Final.jpg

No two love stories are the same. In Hearts and Beaus, enjoy not one, not two, but six unique tales of finding, choosing, and appreciating love. With stories about love that heals, overcomes, endures, and surprises, this collection of contemporary romances from authors spanning several genres is a treasure trove for the hopeless romantic.

Healing Hearts by Amy Stearman

Following a terrible accident that left her widowed and with a mute son, Kate struggles to regain her sense of normalcy. Balancing the diner she runs in her small home town against the weight of her son’s needs, the last thing Kate needs is another complication.

Ben finds himself in the small town of Barton, Missouri running on fumes and his last few dollars. He has no choice but to find a way to make some money or face going back home, a prospect he’d rather avoid.

When something as simple as a misbehaving vehicle brings the two together, their spark is undeniable. However, neither of them could have prepared themselves for just how connected they truly are.

What’s Luck Got To Do With It by E.J. Whitmer

If there’s the possibility of something going wrong, Riley Bremmel is sure to draw the short straw. Half of her life has been spent in a cast or Ace bandage. She’s dated losers and liars and never seems to land on her feet. Until she meets Graham, a handsome stranger who stumbles upon her changing a flat tire on a cold night. Maybe, just maybe, her luck is turning.

Graham Moore is the luckiest man in the Midwest. And, lucky him, he happens to be in the right place at the right time to rescue a damsel in distress. However, as time passes, his luck falters. The closer he gets to Riley, the more things turn against him. After learning of the Moore Family Curse, is it worth losing his luck to win his love?

The Extraordinary Ordinary by Elise Barker

Eva has it all: a good relationship with her husband Charlie, two goofy kids, a solid career, and a comfortable house. But a series of misunderstandings threaten to disrupt her happy normality. Shaken out of their routine and escaping to the woods in an ever-escalating comedy of errors, Eva and Charlie must work together in mutual trust to protect their family from forces outside their control. In the isolation of a rustic cabin, facing increasingly real dangers, Eva and Charlie rediscover the passion that had been missing from their snug yet mundane existence, and learn to appreciate The Extraordinary Ordinary.

105 Reasons by Erin Grosfield

Zoe is living her best life. After inheriting her grandparents’ farmhouse in her tiny hometown, she builds a thriving wedding venue in the old barn. Every day greets her with tranquility and laughs with her faithful, larger-than-life Great Dane. She has everything she needs.

Wyatt loves his penthouse life in the city, his world travels and his money. But with all his success, he has to admit he finds himself lonely and unfulfilled.

When a chance encounter brings their worlds together, will they be able to choose between the lives they know and their unexpected, inescapable longing to be together?

Something Beige by Megan Nelson

Paige is used to going unnoticed. When you’re a little plain and a lot introverted it comes with the territory. Trying to stay optimistic and true to herself, Paige looks for someone who values the natural over the fake, who understands there’s more to a person than meets the eye.

Losing yet another guy to a superficial beauty is the last straw. If all men prefer flash to substance, then she’s done with them. Fostering unwanted cats helps her feel needed and appreciated even if it doesn’t fill every corner of her heart. With all her focus on animal rescue, Paige is unaware that love is closer than she thinks.

If Only by Mica Rossi

Grant Richardson wasn’t looking for love, and certainly not in the silly castle on an island that shouldn’t exist. He was, after all, a lawyer. He didn’t believe in fairytales or pixie dust. Maggie Chalvis had dreamed of love but never expected it. She lived alone, with only her father and his secretary for company, confined to the castle created once upon a time for her enchanting mother.

Two solitary souls traveling in singular orbits. One grand master orchestrating their meeting. And just a little bit of Valentine magic.

Amy Stearman is an avid reader and writer of stories, hailing from the Midwest. She lives in the liberal mecca of Kansas with her husband, young son, and ornery Sheltie.

Amy holds her bachelors degrees in Human Services and Victim Studies, and a Masters degree in Social Work. That might sound pretty cool, but she accidentally ended up in marketing.

When she’s not chasing her six year old or attempting DIY home improvement, she’s jotting down story ideas and dreaming big.

E.J. Whitmer is a young-ish Iowa native who spends her days working in marketing and design. When she is not working or writing, she likes to spend her free time cooking, crafting, attending sporting events, harassing her outrageously good-looking husband or cuddling her toddler son.

Elise Barker received her PhD in English and the Teaching of English in 2014 from Idaho State University where she continues to work as a part time adjunct instructor. Today she is working on the curriculum for an intensive hands-on Harry Potter class for kids ages 11-17. Elise has written in a variety of genres, both academic and creative, but her heart currently lies with studying the art of memoir.

Elise and her husband Chris Elston have two kids and her favorite thing to do is play with them outside, whether it’s hiking, biking, snowshoeing, swimming, canoeing, or going to natural hot springs. If she gets to the end of the day and hasn’t done something Instagram-worthy, she rouses herself up and creates a memory.

Erin Grosfield is an author and perpetual dreamer currently holding down the fort in the Midwest with her musically inclined husband and two young children–one of which is well-behaved. She took her degree in journalism and became a creative entrepreneur, running her own magazine and later producing an original Emmy-nominated home renovation Web series. These days she’s dreaming in novel form and seeing her characters in the grocery store, which she took as a sign to put ideas down on paper and become an author–because, perpetual dreamer.

It’s no exaggeration to say that Megan Nelson is always writing. By day, she puts her two English degrees to work as a technical writer, delivering logical and easy-to-read training materials on demand. At night, she puts logic to bed and lets her creative side out to play. She is especially fond of love stories, ghost stories, science fiction, or any combination thereof.

Megan lives in Kansas with her husband and two young sons. Completing the household is an exceedingly fluffy cat and a surprisingly hardy Betta fish.

Mica Rossi has been writing since she was in the second grade and barely able to form her letters properly. Her first book, Once in a Blue Moon, is a paranormal romance and was selected as a spearhead novel for Melange Books’ White Satin Romance line. Her second published work, Heart Songs, is a collection of short stories and poetry about the human heart and all its boundless emotions. Other works have been featured in several anthologies, and she’s furiously scribbling through various drafts of her second full-length novel, a contemporary romance set during the Christmas season.

Now working as a paralegal to pay the bills, Mica hopes to someday make writing her full-time career. Of her own stories, she says, “I love the juxtaposition of an urban setting against elements of magick or faerie, demons, ghosts or mythical creatures. There’s something that draws me to those pockets of our universe where the laws of physics can be ignored, or at least trifled with. If Only… is one of those stories.”
