He swore to end her.
All Magnus had to do was pick up a package and get his brother’s child back. A simple task that any Caster worth his salt could have done in his sleep, except nothing had been that simple for him in years.
For centuries, Magnus relished in the slaughter and annihilation of the demon race. Ridding the world — and hell — of every last one was an oath he was determined to keep. But Magnus had his own gnawing beasts devouring his soul with memories of a past he was powerless to change.
Zara was something else. She was beautiful and powerful, and the very definition of evil. Yet everything about her called to him, beckoned him to forget his nightmares and vengeance. She could fix everything if he would just submit, but she was the very thing who had ruined him in the first place and Magnus submitted to no one.

She may end him first.

The diner was nearly empty of both his family and patrons. The latter wouldn’t be arriving until later in the evening, but Liam was there with Kyaerin at a nearby table. He had his mug of coffee and the morning paper. She was sipping daintily at a cup of tea.
Beyond them, half reclined on her side across the stage in the corner, was Zara. Her hair spilled in a long, white sheet down the steps. The strands gleamed where the ends brushed up against a patch of sunlight, a silky network of silver and gold merging together. It amazed him how long it was, how thick it seemed, and yet, he knew from experience how impossibly light it actually was, how incredibly soft. It compelled his hands to touch, to sink into and twist. It was crazy how white hot the urge was, how potent.
But it was nothing to the heat, the slow, taunting ripple working up through him in an unstable simmer. It crackled and coiled along his nerves, igniting flames in his veins.
He wanted her. His body wanted her. Refusing that fact was such an undeniable sin, even if he was the only one who knew.
She shifted. A subtle movement he never would have noticed if he hadn’t been watching her so intently. Or, maybe, he noticed because it drew apart the slit in her skirt.
The folds and miles of fabric splayed beneath her like wings, but up until that moment, there was only a glimpse of an ankle. It peeked out, a small, helpless appendage exposed to the world. It was the one with the markings, the winding design twisting up the perfect length of leg. The pattern made his fingers itch to follow, to trace upward until he’d reached the V above her hip.
She reminded him of a Playboy centerfold. It did nothing to taper the urge to turn her over right where she sat, push aside the strip of fabric concealing her, part her thighs, and go to town on her clit. It was maddening how badly he wanted the taste of her on his tongue.
“Stop it,” whispered her voice in his head.
Magnus blinked, startled to find himself frozen in place with his attention fixed on Zara with the focus of a wolf. Part of him wondered what he would have done if they’d been alone. Would he have followed his hunger to her? Would he have already had her on her back, knees wide around his shoulders, back arched? He could almost hear her gasping his name.
Yes, just like that.
“We are surrounded by your family … and children.”

Dead of Night

The Blood Curse Chronicles

by James Agee Jr.

Genre: Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Romance

All families have secrets.

Some have secrets worth dying for.

The Vasile family owns a funeral home in Frederickton, Virginia. For the most part, life in this small town is ideal. However, there is one secret they try to hide – one that could destroy their lives as they know it.

They are vampires.

When a strange girl comes to town for her grandmother’s funeral, new information is uncovered. There is a chance the Vasiles and all other vampires will know a day when they can become human and break the blood curse that has plagued vampires for centuries.

She opens her mouth to say something, more than likely about what book I should purchase, but I speak before she can get any words out.

“Was someone playing the piano earlier?”

She tilts her head as if I have just asked her a confusing question.

“Well…I don’t know how to explain this. It won’t make much sense to you, but the piano plays itself.”

She must see the disbelief written across my face because she hastily adds, “Sometimes there is the shadow of a person sitting on the piano bench, but honest to goodness the keys play themselves.”

The music starts playing and I find my body gravitating towards the sound. The keys bob up and down swiftly seemingly of their own accord. My heart leaps as I see the shadow of a person sitting on the bench. If I did not believe the old woman before, I sure do now.

I inch closer to the piano.

Is it a spirit? A ghost? My imagination?

A fast paced jazz tune is echoing throughout the shop. I close my eyes and take a deep breath, filling my lungs with the inky dust particles. I open my eyes and the head of the shadow is facing toward me. I reach out to touch it, unsure if I should. My hand goes right through the dark form and slowly the music stops playing.

The woman’s hand tugs on my arm. There is a slightly annoyed look on her wrinkled face.

“Why did you go and scare him off?”

I can’t help but ask her, “Him? How do you know that it is a ‘him’?

She chuckles and pushes her glasses up her nose to keep them from sliding off.

“Dear, you can tell by how he plays the piano. There’s such passion behind the sounds. He has so much emotion.”

Jax dropped low to the ground, and army-crawled from the beam he was standing behind to a stack of construction supplies approximately ten feet in front of him. He would need a better position to take down the bird if Jade got stuck. He wouldn’t want to miss his shot and hit his sister. Jax was hidden much better than Jade had been, as he was dressed all in black from his head to toe. Even with his black hair, the only visible part of him was his face, which he kept toward the ground while he crawled.
As he made it to the pile, he slowly moved to a kneeling position behind the lumber to see how much the fight had changed in the few moments it took to crawl. Surprisingly, not much. The harpy was still dripping blood as she circled away from Jade. Jade was slowly moving in step with the bird while keeping just out of the reach of the bird’s clawed arms as she assessed the situation.
The girls continued to circle each other, but neither moved closer. The bird seemed to sense that Jade was more of a threat than she appeared. Jax could almost smile at that. Most people underestimated him and his sister, but being raised by one of the best night human hunters out there had its perks. Jax leveled his gun in front of him. Jade had a time limit because the rest of the team was hitting the nest soon to reduce the number of harpies. They had already picked a successor that was willing to keep to the rules. Without the leader at the nest, the team would have no trouble eliminating the rest of the harpies.
Jax had the shot and waited for his sister’s approval before a hand came up beside him and pulled it down.
‘This is her fight,’ Rommy mouthed to him. They were too close to speak now as the bird would know their position if they did.
Jax glared at Rommy. Jade was his sister and the only family he cared about. There was no way he was going to let her be skewered by a bird to prove that she wasn’t ready to be a full-time hunter. Rommy and he both knew Jade was more than ready to join the hunters as a full-fledged member, but there was always the possibility for even the best hunter to be taken down by an unpredictable night human … especially one that knew it was her death if she lost.
