Allie

When I moved to River’s Edge, dating was the last thing on my mind.
I definitely didn’t expect to fall for him.
Jesse Shepherd.
Popular. Star athlete. Cocky as hell.
You know the type.
But as time passed, I realized there was more lurking beneath that gorgeous exterior.
Secretive. Angry. A little bit broken.
The more I peeled back his layers, the deeper I fell.
Until I slammed headfirst into his sea of lies.

Jess

I blew my shot.
Pissed everything away—college, lacrosse, my future—only to end up right back where I started in River’s Edge.
I was content to revel in my misery, spending my days drowning in a bottomless pit of booze and girls.
Until I saw her.
Allison Parrish.
Beautiful. Sarcastic. Perpetual bad attitude.
The pretty little distraction from the shit show that was my life.
But the sins of my past were closing in on me, and I learned the hard way that nothing gold can stay.

“Did you hear that?” I ask.

Moving in slowly, he cages me in, bracing his right arm on the wall above my head, his left hand by my hip. He brings his lips close to my ear and I fight the shiver that rolls through me. “It’s probably just your admirer,” he says, his voice hushed and husky. I swallow hard, looking over his shoulder as he nuzzles closer, his nose skimming my neck, then down to my collarbone. My pulse pounds in my ears as he moves back up, his mouth brushing across my cheek, stopping at my parted lips.

“Is this convincing?” He asks. He’s so close that I can feel his breath on my lips, and I realize that I want him to do it. I want him to kiss me.

I give a slight shake of my head in response.

“No?” He smirks, knowing exactly what he’s doing to me. His left hand leaves the wall to curl around my hip and he presses his chest to mine. “How about this?”

“Almost,” I whisper. I wet my lips and the tip of my tongue nearly grazes his bottom lip. His expression goes from playful to heated in an instant, then he’s closing the final distance.

It’s soft at first, just a brush of his lips against mine, but soon he’s cupping my face with both hands, tilting my head back as his tongue sweeps into my mouth, his movements confident and skilled. Unhurried and unyielding.

My hands find his shirt, pulling him closer as his tongue fucks my mouth. Because that’s exactly what this is. This isn’t kissing. Or maybe it is, and I’ve been kissing the wrong boys.

Jesse groans, fitting a firm thigh between my legs, and the need bubbling inside me threatens to boil over at the sensation. But all too soon, he pulls back, leaving me breathless.

“Was that convincing enough?”

Chapter 1

Looking over her shoulder, Sophie exited the little gas station just outside of Riverton, California through the back of the store and opened the package that held a burner phone. Pulling Gaige Vicker’s phone number from her front jean pocket, written on a crumpled piece of a discarded newspaper she’d dug out of the dumpster at her apartment complex, she quickly tapped the numbers into the phone. She regretted having to dismantle and toss her brand new cell phone, but she knew they’d be able to track her with it and she just couldn’t take the chance.

Throwing Gaige’s number into a nearby garbage can so no one would connect them should she be captured, she quickly made her way across the quiet street and ducked between a large boxwood hedge and a wooden fence. Pressing her back to the warm wood, her eyes ever vigilant to her surroundings, she remained wary. Her heart was still pounding hard from her run through the woods. That bastard who was chasing her told her not to talk to another person about what she knew, her time was up. Swallowing the bile that threatened to rise at the thought of how close she’d come to dying today, she inhaled slowly. By the third ring her heart began racing. “Come on, pick up,” She mumbled into the phone.

“Vickers.” Her hand flew to cover her mouth as a sob almost escaped. Ducking down further behind the hedge, she whispered, “Gaige? Oh, Gaige, it’s Sophie. I’m in trouble and you’re the only one who can help me.”

Taking a deep breath to regain her composure, she held her breath as she waited for him to respond. “Sophie Turner?”

“Yes.” She hated that she sounded so desperate, but she was. Glancing around to make sure no one was nearby, she swallowed before continuing. “Gaige, I’m in trouble. I need help. I’m all alone.”

“What about your friend, Kate?” Closing her eyes to stay the tears that threatened to spill, she took another deep breath. “Kate’s dead. I’m in trouble. Can you come?”

“Okay, Sophie, tell me what’s going on.”

“I can’t, Gaige, I’m afraid they’re following me and I have to make tracks. I’m scared to say too much on the phone. I’m just outside of Riverton. Call me on this burner phone number when you get here. 939-202-9786.”

“Sophie, you need to tell me something. What are you up against? What kind of backup do I need?”

“I’m sorry.” Fighting a sob, her voice cracked. “Can you come? Can you help me?”

She heard him exhale and knew she was asking a lot of him, but she had nowhere to turn. Whispering, “please,” she heard his voice change.

“I’ll be there as soon as I can.”

“Thank you.” She broke down sobbing, but ended the call, nervous that she’d stayed put too long. Looking all around, she stepped from between the hedge and the fence heading south toward Canyon Creek. She could walk for hours, her Army training had conditioned her for that. Bonus that she wasn’t carrying a ruck sack, so she was traveling light. She’d make better time that way.

Attacked from behind, strong arms wrapped themselves around her, she felt herself falling to the ground, face first and tried to twist to land on her attacker. Not quite managing, her right shoulder took the brunt of the fall but not before her attacker managed to reach around and punch her in the jaw once, bringing stars to her eyes. She heard her phone clatter to the ground and her eyes fell on it just in time to see it slide under a nearby trashcan with wheels. Shit.

Fighting passing out, she began kicking back at her attacker and heard him grunt when she managed a good solid kick to his shin. Taking the opportunity, she threw her head back and connected with his nose. Hearing the nasty crunch, she rolled away as he howled, scrambled to her feet, and took off running. The pain slicing through her shoulder hampered her pace, but she was determined to keep going. No way she’d allow them to kill her like they killed Kate. No way in hell. The bastards.

Setting her mind to hear the music she played in her head during their long and arduous runs in the Army, she steadied her pace and refused to look back. Reaching the nearby woods, she ducked in, and carefully watched the terrain as she navigated the downed branches and stumps of trees long ago fallen. Listening for anything behind her, she finally ventured a glance and saw that she wasn’t being followed. At least not closely.

Slowing her pace to a fast walk, she looked up through the trees to see where the sun was in the sky. At 2:00 p.m., in California, the sun was just beginning its decent, toward the west, so she adjusted her direction and headed due south. The sun would still shine brightly for another five hours or so. She could realistically travel ten to twelve miles in that time. She’d done it more than once. But, she’d never been more determined than now to make time and distance.

She’d find a place to rest tonight, then she’d find a way to go back in the morning and retrieve her phone. That was the only place she had Gaige’s number and it was the only way Gaige had to reach her. Hopefully, her attacker didn’t see the phone slide to its landing place. If the grunt she’d heard from him was any indicator, he was in a fair amount of pain right now. But she wasn’t going back there to look in case he had help. That would be tomorrow’s task.

Excerpt from Courageous:
Heavy, slow footsteps beat against the wooden floorboards leading up the stairway. With my heart leaping from my chest, I scramble behind one of the couches, breath held as I attempt to make myself smaller. For all I know, my father’s goons were following me all this time. They love to toy with me whenever my father’s not around, sometimes even seeing what it takes to make me cry.
“The fuck you doin’ here?” a deep voice growls from around the corner. Next thing I know, my thigh’s kicked by a booted foot. Cigarette smoke pollutes the air. “Hey, moron, I’m talkin’ to you. Your skinny ass is trespassin’.”
Pulling my hood down, I drag my gaze up a pair of dirty jeans and an intimidatingly thick torso covered with a leather coat until I’m met with chillingly beautiful eyes. They’re the same pale blue as a cloudless sky on a warm day.
But there’s a disturbing darkness behind the man’s hard stare, sucking all the air from my lungs. Chin-length hair the color of straw slicked back, strong jaw set, he’s fiercely good looking and older than me—maybe even out of high school. Most importantly, he’s an enormous, scary dude. Worst of all, he reminds me of my father’s men. The type who wouldn’t bat an eye at beating a woman.
If he decides to hurt me, there won’t be a damn thing I can do to stop him.
His beautiful eyes widen at the same time a smirk pulls at his thick lips. He seems to either be surprised that I’m a girl, or amused I’m not running in fear. “You speak English, lil’ mouse?” he sniggers in a voice that’s so deep and rough it rumbles through my chest.
Heat spreads through my cheeks. My belly tingles. “The door was open.”
“By open, you mean boarded shut?” As he puffs on his cigarette, pale blue eyes drag across my body. I cower beneath my bag, feeling exposed under his threatening stare. I’m feeling all kinds of things, some I don’t know how to describe. He’s beautiful and terrifying at the same time, sending a wave of shivers down my back. “What’re you doin’ here, anyway?”
I hold his stare, refusing to be rattled. “I just need a place to camp out for a few nights.”
“You took this as a free-for-all shelter?” He lets out a cold, heartless laugh. “Sweetheart, that place is down the road.”
My stomach tightens when he says “sweetheart,” making it hard to speak. To him, I probably look like a little girl, but under his potent gaze, I feel like a grown woman. “I can give you money…if you’ll let me stay,” I wheeze out.
He snarls like a wolf. “Go home to your daddy, princess. Girls like you have no business in a place like this.”
Rage thickens through my throat. “Girls like me?” I spit out, rising to my feet. He towers over me like a skyscraper. And there’s so much danger in his gaze that part of me wants to run. But even after he blows a stream of smoke in my face, I refuse to back down. “You have no idea who I am, or what I’ve been through!”
“Doesn’t matter. You’re outta your element.”
He bends down to my level, stopping just before our noses touch. A cold chill of fear spikes my veins, making it hard to breathe in his masculine scent. Rather than being sweaty or gross like with boys my age, it’s as dark and mysterious as the man it belongs to.
More tingles invade my belly when I wonder what it would be like to be kissed by this big, angry man. I haven’t been kissed by anyone, but I imagine those wide, soft lips could wreck me in an instant. When they move again, I almost sigh.
“Go. The fuck. Home.”
Shaking my head, I hold my chin higher, determined not to let him win. Whatever this guy decides to do with me can’t be any worse than what my father will do once he discovers I’ve left. “I can’t go home.”
Tension between us breaks with the sound of more footsteps. A handful of seconds later, I’m ready to cry a thousand gallons of tears of relief when a teenage girl walks in, dark eyes widening on me.
“Andie?” she asks, lips wavering with an unsure smile. “Oh my god, what’re you doing here? I haven’t seen you in forever!”
It only takes a second to recognize the big, beautiful mocha eyes belonging to Sasha Green. We’ve been close since elementary school, having bonded during a recess when Lucas Reynolds yanked me to the ground by my hair. Sasha marched right up to him and threatened to have her big brother and his friends kick his ass. I didn’t know anything about her brother or his friends at the time, but I guessed they must’ve been scary, because Lucas looked ready to piss himself with the warning, and never bothered me again.
Pretty much no one bothered me after I became friends with Sasha. We ate lunch together every day, and hung out whenever we had a chance. I wasn’t allowed to have friends outside of school, and never knew much about her home life, but I get the feeling she wouldn’t understand why I’m running away. She always seemed close with her brother, and she was laid back the few times I saw her interact with his friends. I figured she had the kind of normal parents who read her bedtime stories when she was little, and tucked her in with a kiss.
The big scary guy turns to Sasha, upper lip curled. “You know this chick?”
“Yeah, she’s a friend…from way back.” Sasha’s eyes narrow on him as she sets a hand on her hip. The guy must not be too dangerous the way she’s throwing him attitude. “Why? What’d you say? I swear to god, Stone, if you were a dick to her—”
“Tell your little friend she can’t stay here.” Stone drops the cigarette on the floor and crushes it with a boot before his beautiful blues lock on me. “Stay the fuck outta this neighborhood.”
As he saunters back to the stairway, my heart flips several times in my chest. Why’d he have to be so mean? He acted like he hates my guts, and I’ve never even met him before.
What kind of name is “Stone” anyway? Maybe it has something to do with his cold, stony heart. I’d never met anyone so cranky and gorgeous at the same time. The second he’s out of sight, the darkness brought on by his surly mood vanishes and I’m finally able to breathe.

“Do you want to tell me why you f*@king shot me?”“I didn’t…what? Where?”

He pulled the ripped fabric away from his thigh where blood trickled sluggishly.

“It doesn’t look that bad.”

“It’s not, but why the f*@k were you shooting at me?”

“Because I was trying to kill the bad guys,” I shouted.

“Yeah, with your f*@king eyes closed! Who does that?”

“I was scared!”

“So, you close your eyes and hope for the best?”

“It was a gut reaction. I didn’t mean to do it. It just happened!”

“And did you mean to follow me and join in the action? Because you were supposed to stay right where you f*@king were while I took care of them.”

“You didn’t say that,” I shouted incredulously. “You shoved a gun in my hand and ran away. I thought I was supposed to be your backup or something. Next time say something.”

“There won’t be a next time. I’m not ever giving you a gun again!”

“I’ll do better next time!”

He scoffed. “Yeah, like you might keep your eyes open? Or you’ll try not to shoot me?”

I scowled at him and stomped around the back of the truck and over to the passenger side of the truck, opening the door and hopping in.

“What are you doing?”

“We’re leaving, aren’t we?”

“Not in that truck. There are a man’s innards all over the front. That’s not exactly being discreet.”

“Well, I didn’t know that,” I said, hopping out of the truck and stomping back around to his side. “You could have just said, ‘Hey, Raegan, we’re going to grab a different truck since I just splattered a man against this one. See how easy that is?”

“I would think the fact that there’s a dead man attached to the grill would have clued you in,” he scowled.

I’m a stay at home mom that loves to read. Some of my favorite titles are Pride and Prejudice, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Horatio Hornblower. I started writing when I was trying to come up with suggestions on ways I could help bring in some extra money. I came up with the idea that I could donate plasma because you could earn an extra $500/month. My husband responded with, “No. Find something else. Write a blog. Write a book.” I didn’t think I had anything to share on blog that a thousand other mothers hadn’t already thought of. I decided to take his challenge seriously and sat down to write my first book, Jack. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed writing. From there, the stories continued to flow and I haven’t been able to stop. I hope my readers enjoy my books as much as I enjoy writing them. Between reading, writing, and taking care of three small kids, my days are quite full.
