Hours after repairing an ancient tapestry at a quaint bed and breakfast, she grows incomprehensibly tired, and wakes up to realize she’s not in her room, with no memory of when or how she left. There was a bang across the hall as Max strutted in. His usual smooth grin hit me from across the room as he filled up a bowl full of slop. Amusement tugged at the corner of his mouth when I scowled back at him and he parked himself down across from me.
“Do you mind?” he asked.
“It’s a free world.” I shrugged.
He snorted. This was his usual game, finding any way to annoy me. Even sitting down across from me irritated me to no end, but I did my best to ignore him and returned to stirring my cold food.
We were both silent as Max moved his food around with his spoon for a few minutes before he let out a heavy sigh. Max placed the bowl onto the floor where Chevy was waiting eagerly to gobble it all down.
“I can’t eat any more of this garbage,” he grumbled.
“Keep your voice down,” I hushed.
“Oh, come on. It’s not like you’re eating it either. Everyone knows it sucks. I’m not saying anything you’re not already thinking.” He gestured to my still-full bowl, now cold from sitting for so long.
“We’re guests here. Show a little respect.” My voice was quiet but stern.
Max leaned into the table, surveying my body, my face, and my mouth. “Then you eat it,” he challenged me. “Eat more than one bite, and I’ll stop complaining.” He raised an eyebrow. I wasn’t sure if he was trying to piss me off, or if the hint of worry and pleading in his voice I detected was begging me to eat something. Anything. I’d been starving myself unintentionally, but it was hard to focus on things like eating when there was so much rattling my brain.
I didn’t look away, and I didn’t touch the spoon that still sat in my cold food. Crossing my arms, I settled in to wait him out, unwilling to let him win even one battle with me.
His shoulders slumped, and I realized worry indeed was hidden behind his feeble challenge. He pushed his chair back hard, clenching his jaw tightly, as he picked up the empty bowl from Chevy. “Didn’t think so. Looks like we’re both going to starve to death in this metal trap.”
I rolled my eyes, “I’ll be fine. You’re the one who will suffer, not me.”
He swaggered around the table and leaned in so close that his breath tickled my neck, but I didn’t flinch or look away. His gaze swept from my head to my toes once again. “I’m not the one who needs to save a dying world. I don’t need to be in peak condition or feed a body that isn’t quite human. I’m not the one who’ll suffer. Everyone else will if you don’t stop moping around and feeling sorry for yourself.” His cold glare was like ice in my veins as he stepped away. With a slight smirk, he spun on his heels and left before I’d even blinked, leaving a shudder down my spine.
His words rang in my ears, “a body that isn’t quite human.” I was a Carbon now, no longer human, even though every instinct inside of me was wired to protect humans, not hurt them. That was why they all looked at me differently, why Max looked at me with prying eyes as if he was trying to figure out what exactly I was. I was different, yet I found myself forgetting that at times.
But I wasn’t a hero anymore. I was no longer someone or something to be proud of. There was a monster living inside of me, waiting to break free. And the weight of everything he said was the reason I hadn’t slept in weeks or eaten in days. I wanted to do something about it. I wanted to be better. But every time I thought of it, the guilt and pain took over, and I could barely breathe without breaking down. I often wondered what Kenzie would think if he saw me, or if he knew what I was—what I had become. Would he look at me like he used to? Or would he look at me with disgust for what I let happen to me? What I let myself become?
Chevy sat at my side, pawing at my leg, as he looked up with worried eyes. I stroked his head as I looked at my bowl of slop with a groan. My hand quivered as I took a tentative bite and fought the gag threatening to bring the food back up. With a long, hard swallow, I took another bite and another—until the bowl was empty.
And I could’ve sworn I saw the door to the hall close a crack more than it had been before.

Witch Wants Forever

WITCH WANTS FOREVER

The Witches of Wimberley Book 2

by Victoria Danann

Genre: Contemporary Romantic Fantasy

YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU’VE GOT TILL IT’S GONE.

Only one thing could be worse than never finding the love of your life…finding her and forgetting.

From New York Times bestselling author, Victoria Danann, “mistress of modern romantic fantasy”.

“…illustrated that love is the strongest magic of all.”

Rachel can’t imagine life without Dashiell Fonteneau. They were the kind of couple who believed they were destined to find each other eons before they were born.Married people, but forever lovers.

When Dash goes to Denver on a business trip that was supposed to last for three days and doesn’t come home, Rachel finds herself in conflict with the colony at Wimberley over what to do.

The entire community is in complete agreement when they decide magic can’t be used to bring him back. They say she’ll have to learn to live without him.

“I was tense the entire time I was reading this book. It keep me riveted. I couldn’t put it down.”

READERS ARE SAYING: It’s the perfect blend of angst, humor, and a little night magic.

A year and odd months earlier, he’d spent a few weeks celebrating finishing his MBA at Tulane. And there was no place better to celebrate anything than the home of Tulane, New Orleans. He was on top of the world. Twenty-six years old with a prestigious degree from a prestigious school and a string of prospective job courtiers lined up to write him a golden ticket. So that he didn’t have to accept the path of least resistance and go to work for his family’s business.

Any day he was going to decide which lucky company would be honored to have him agree to work for them. While he was mulling, he was partying. Right up until the day he got the mysterious invitation to come to an exclusive presentation.

Normally that sort of suggestion would make him scoff and snort at the same time.

He tried throwing the card away. Several times. But would always go get it out of the trash and look at it again. That cycle repeated itself for three days before he called the number and agreed to see what they were offering. Just so his curiosity would be satisfied and he could get back to deciding between serious offers.

He attended the presentation, went to choosing week at Wimberley, and, most important, met Rachel. After that he wouldn’t have cared if he worked as the dog catcher in the world’s tiniest town just as long as he could be near her.

Dash had a tendency to see the world in patterns that largely consisted of numbers. Nature had balanced his business genius by giving him scant imagination and no reason to think he was missing out. So his perception of Rachel as a woman surrounded by light that was a symphony of sparkle and movement, was mesmerizing. Permanently.

In a community full of couples experiencing the kind of marital bliss that was indeed bliss and not intended as tongue-in-cheek snark, Dash and Rachel managed to stand out. It was generally accepted by the residents of the enclave that their relationship was unique.

Dash had given up a career that might have eventually landed him on the cover of Forbes, but once he met Rachel, he no longer cared where he worked. When he’d shown up for the invitational not really knowing why he was there, just like the other guys, he hadn’t needed it to slowly become clear that he was half of a fated match. He saw Rachel across a crowded courtyard and knew instantly where he was supposed to be.

He didn’t need to wait to hear the way her voice slid over his spirit and soothed him like a favorite song. He didn’t need to wait to feel the electricity that arced between them when he shook her hand. He didn’t need to wait to see her blush from the intense way he was visually devouring her.

Dash was more than content to manage the enclave’s money and investments, which benefitted not only the witches and their families, but the residents of Wimberley as well. It was a good fit for his particular talent, skill, and interest. Satisfying to the core.

Romance that is destiny laced, fantasy infused, and dressed in a little night magic.

If he leaves, he can never come back. But is he dumb enough to get in his car and drive away anyhow?

New York Times bestselling author, Victoria Danann, begins a sizzling new series about an enclave of modern day witches who are sexy, philanthropic and living in the Texas Hill Country. They’re selfless to a fault when it comes to generosity, but when it comes to the men they choose for themselves, they don’t settle for anything less than the best.

“Enchanted from the very first page. I couldn’t put it down!”– Night Owl Reviews 5* TOP PICK

While waiting for what would probably be his last acting audition ever, the guy standing in line behind Willem gave him a card with a phone number on it and said, “You’re a good looking guy. If you’re definitely quitting, try the witches.”

Willem took the card for the sake of being polite. He planned to throw it away, but didn’t. Crazy as it sounded, it seemed like the card was bugging him. It even kept him awake when he put it in the refrigerator.

He called the number, entered the competition and won. Winning meant getting everything he’d never even dared to dream about.

USA TODAY Bestselling Author, Victoria Danann, is making her debut into Contemporary Romance with releases in May and June 2015, after taking the world of PNR by storm.

Her Knights of Black Swan series won BEST PARANORMAL ROMANCE SERIES TWO YEARS IN A ROW (2013, 2014). Reviewers Choice Awards, The Paranormal Romance Guild.

Victoria’s paranormal romances come with uniquely fresh perspectives on “imaginary” creatures, characters, and themes. She adds a dash of scifi, a flourish of fantasy, enough humor to make you laugh out loud, and enough steam to make you squirm in your chair. Her heroines are independent femmes with flaws and minds of their own whether they are aliens, witches, demonologists, psychics, past life therapists, or financial analysts from Dallas. Her heroes are hot and hunky, but they also have brains, character, and good manners – usually – whether they be elves, demons, berserkers, werewolves, or vampires.

The first book of the Knights of Black Swan Paranormal Romance Series, My Familiar Stranger, was nominated for Best Paranormal Romance of 2012 by both Reviewers’ Choice and Readers’ Choice Awards. All of her books have opened on the Amazon Best Sellers list and earned Night Owl Reviews TOP PICK awards. Many have appeared on Listopia BOOK OF THE MONTH as #1 across all genres.

For books published in 2013, Black Swan won three awards. 1. Best Paranormal Romance Series 2. Best Paranormal Romance Novel – A SUMMONER’S TALE 3. Best Vampire~Shifter Novel – MOONLIGHT. In 2014, Solomon’s Sieve won Best Vampire Novel.

If you’re interested in Victoria personally, she is also a classically trained musician who defected to Classic Rock music. Until 2013 she was the utility player for Houston’s Roadhouse band, which means she played rhythm guitar, keyboards, sang back ups and female leads. Her band covered everything (note for note) from Styx to Led Zepellin to Rush.

She lives in The Woodlands, Texas with her husband and a very smart, mostly black German Shepherd dog.

I was nothing, a washed up, useless nobody to them. The angered look that permanently etched my face wasn’t new for any of them. The resting bitch face was something that defined me, Davina, the spoiled, unhappy, selfish brat. I suppose they were right about that. I really wasn’t a happy go lucky girl. I didn’t carry around a cheery disposition. I didn’t grow up showered with love and affection or dolls and ponies. I wasn’t a pampered princess like that.

No. I was raised with wolves.

EXCERPT

His voice rose from the crystal but I could not see who was speaking. It was comforting and familiar. A sound I hadn’t heard in a very long time.

“Father?” I whispered.

His ghostly figure appeared before me, standing in the center of the floating petals. His form was barely visible. His presence was only allowed because of the magic that the ritual possessed. He stood tall and proud. His jaw was firm and his eyes were set, the face of a warrior, but he had the tender smile of a father and sparkling eyes full of pride.

I found myself leery, gawking at the figure that stood before me, I wasn’t sure how to react to seeing my dead father materializing in front of me. I hardly remembered him or knew him, but deep down the girl I once was still longed for my father. Mark had been the only father I truly knew, but there was my very own, full of pride for his only daughter. I didn’t know what to say or how to react. Was it meant to be a happy reunion or was I dreaming?

“Father … I … “

“You have accepted your fate. Your destiny has just begun,” he said, not moving towards me or stretching his arms our for a long awaited embrace.

The Emergent Threat

THE EMERGENT THREAT

War Eternal, Book II

by J.F Cain

Genre: Romantic Fantasy Adventure

Alex risked his soul to reunite with Aranes, the angel he’s in love with, forcing her to make the ultimate sacrifice to save him. Having lost her supernatural powers, Guardians and Exorcists fight tooth and nail to protect her, but they cannot keep the dark forces that are after her away for long.

Aranes’ relationship with Alex also puts him in the crosshairs of Lucifer, who wants the angel for himself and plans to destroy his rival, even if he doesn’t believe that the man is the incarnation of the high-ranking Celestial, Abaddon.

Alex must push himself beyond his limits and use all his wits to thwart Lucifer’s plans. He may be just an ordinary man, but he won’t give up his partner without a fight. He’s willing to pay any price, any price except for losing her.

Alex walked out onto the balcony and paused for a moment to enjoy the sight of his exceptional beloved calmly, and rather pensively, waiting for him. He still could not believe that she was here, in his home, with him.

“OK, I’ve arranged everything,” he said happily as he came back to her. He sat down, drank the remaining coffee in his cup and refilled it. He then looked at Aranes’ cup, which was empty. “Would you like me to pour you some?” he asked, annoyed with himself for not noticing it. “From what I remember, you like it.”

“You got the wrong message through no fault of yours. That morning in the cabin I drank coffee to look normal. There’s no longer any reason for me to do it; I am normal now.”

Alex quirked an eyebrow and looked at her, about to burst into laughter.

“Anyway, as normal as an incarnated Angel can be,” Aranes added.

Alex reached out with his left hand, grabbed her chair’s armrest and pulled it towards him. He then wrapped his arms around her waist and came as close to her as the armrests between them would allow.

“My love, I assure you that your anatomy is somewhat above and beyond normal. I made a thorough check last night.”

His innuendo surprised Aranes and it showed on her face.

Alex saw that change in her expression and was abruptly serious.

“What’s wrong, my angel? Did I say something that offended you?” he asked worriedly.

“No, I’m just not used to people speaking to me this way… all this is more or less new to me.”

Alex’s heart pounded.

“Is there something you regret?”

“My position doesn’t allow me to make frivolous decisions,” Aranes replied reassuringly, sensing his worry. “In every situation I do what I think is right or necessary.”

“Is it right for an Angel to love a mortal?” he asked, his expression calm, but the anxiety in his voice betrayed his inner turmoil.

“I love all beings,” Aranes answered, her kind, warm eyes lighting up with beautiful emotions. “I just love you differently, and for that to happen there must be a serious reason.”

Alex’s anxiety had reached its peak.

“And what is the reason?”

“I can’t say anything with certainty right now,” was Aranes’ response. She could, but she didn’t want to frighten him. It would be better for him if the revelations came in stages, if he was lucky. “What I am sure about is that our love will bring many changes, both in the physical and in the ethereal planes.”

The first part of her answer disappointed Alex. But from the little he grasped in the second part, he held on to the words “our love”, which he liked a lot.

“So you don’t regret anything,” he said, searching her eyes for confirmation.

Aranes saw the vein pulsing rapidly at the base of his neck and wanted to save him from the anxiety tormenting him once and for all.

“I love you,” she stated, looking him in the eye with an expression that left no room for doubt.

Alex felt all the wonderful feelings that such a statement brings out in a man who is madly in love. He slipped his hand behind her neck, brought her face close to his and gave her a long, deep kiss, filling her mouth with passionate love. Like a lit match falling on flammable material that instantly catches fire, his hunger blazed. He wanted her like mad, but he held himself in check. He was scared he would frighten her with his unflagging desire to make love to her. She wasn’t an ordinary woman. She was something different, something superior. He had to treat her accordingly, and limiting his heated demonstrations of his feelings would be a good start.

Angels’ Whispers

Alex Meyers, a dynamic, global entrepreneur, has an advantage that no other human has ever had: he is protected by Aranes, the Superior of the Angels. While he is skiing, he dies in an avalanche, but his all-powerful protector breaks one of the ethereal world’s most important Rules and brings him back to life. Alex falls head over heels in love with the beautiful Angel, who appears to him in human form. But she disappears just as suddenly as she had appeared.

While he searches for Aranes, Alex discovers her true identity and that he actually might be the high-ranking Celestial Abaddon, who is mentioned in the Revelations prophecy as the one who will defeat Lucifer.

The man who fate has thrust among the world’s superpowers is now living a nightmare. He wants to evade Lucifer’s pursuit, find out who he truly is and once again see the only being he has ever loved. And the only way to do it is to make the ultimate sacrifice.

The eternal war between Light and Darkness is at a critical turning point: Angels and Demons, invisible to mortal beings, battle for dominance in the physical world, while Guardians, vampires and werewolves, who live among the humans, find themselves on opposing sides in a deadly power game.

“What is the creature that walks on four legs in the morning, two legs at noon, and three in the evening?” The price to pay for answering the riddle incorrectly, which of course they all did, was not a simple denial of entry to Thebes. Instead of turning them away, the sphinx, monster that was, strangled them with her tail and devoured them whole.
The story goes that when it finally came to pass that someone could answer her riddle and the consecutive ones to follow, she committed suicide. What else was a girl to do? Some say she threw herself down from the high rocks and fell to her death, while others say that she devoured herself, subjecting herself to the same punishment she dished out to all those who had failed before, a talented feat.
However, the question remains … what really happened to her?

A back door sitting to the right off a dark alley gave them access to the training center. Once a thriving boxing facility, it now was used mostly for moms in yoga pants attempting their best at CrossFit. The gym was owned by the man who ran the orphanage Carter frequented. The allotment of free time, after hours, was his way of thanking Carter for his work at the orphanage.
“You want to box?” Asa asked as she watched Carter head for the relic of the past that sat in the back corner. The ring obviously wasn’t used often.
“I want to fight. Trust me, our enemies will not be in boxers’ stances.”
“That’s true enough, but then again, they won’t exactly be trying to have hand-to-hand sparring matches either. These are powerful beings. What makes you think they would limit themselves in such a way?”
“I have no doubt that they will use every advantage available to them. That doesn’t negate the fact that we will need to protect ourselves in every possible way that we can.” He jumped in the ring. “Our hands, our bodies, are one of those ways.”
“Great, so show me your master plan to fend off a god when he comes at you.” She stood outside watching him warm up. Shadow boxing imaginary demons. His form was exact, his body strong, but then again, she already knew that.
“How about you try me and see?” He stopped and held the ropes open, inviting her to join him.
“Try you? You think you can take me?” Carter was strong, but he had no idea what he was really up against. She climbed in the ring, refusing his assistance, and stood to face him. “Where was all that back in Oikos?” she teased him.
“I was caught off guard. But please, tell me something.” He leaned in close, taunting her. “Do I look worried?”
“Let’s see what you got!” She pushed him and jumped back, landing in a crouched position.
“Bring it.”
Asa held back on her first attack. She pulled her punches and moved just fast enough to test his reflexes. The man was good, matching her move for move. She punched, he blocked. She kicked, he dodged. When she retreated from him, he kept on her. To give her space would be to give her momentum for a stronger attack.
“Good, you’re a quick study,” she complimented him, but before he could thank her, she quickened her speed, dropped to one knee and swept her leg out, and knocked his feet from under him. His back slammed against the floor of the ring. Quickly she was on top of him, but he’d recovered, blocked her, and knocked her away. Their fight grew with intensity as both tested the other and then challenged with more power, more force.
The energy changed when Asa ran for Carter who surprised her. On his wrist, what looked like a normal accessory, a poor choice for fashion, was a band. He tapped the side and it lit up and emitted a white light that wrapped around her legs lasso style and tripped her.
“What the hell was that? You have magic?” Asa pulled herself up. The fight was long from over, but the rules had definitely changed.
“All of the hunters have these little accessories, talisman that transfer power to us. They were given to us to protect us. We want to keep the gods out, but we are no fools. Not every run is going to be a smooth one. Sometimes we have to fight to survive. And as you said, gods, even the weak ones, have no consideration for what is a fair game.”
“You’re right. They don’t. And neither do I!” She attacked again, this time she dodged the whip and landed a blow to his jaw. He bounced back, barely fazed, and came at her. This time it was her to issue the surprise as she used the magic of a forest nymph she’d taken out and forced a blow of air into his chest. He fell into the corner of the ring gasping for air.
“I knew there was more to you than you let on,” he grunted as the pressure against his chest ceased.
“A girl has to have her secrets.”
The sparring continued, each switching between physical fighting and magical. The gym rang out with echoes of their fight. Unfortunately, Asa got swept away with energy from the fight. It had been a long time since she’d fought a suitable opponent and Carter continued to prove himself as just that. She ducked back to dodge another blow from the whip and released a blow of her own that knocked him to the ground.
“Ha!” She jumped around the ring, celebrating. “Come on, get up. I know you got more than that.” She danced around more, mimicking his earlier shadow boxing, but Carter didn’t respond.
“Carter?” she called, sweat pouring from her brow. When he still didn’t move, she ran to him and fell to her knees at his side. “Oh, shit, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to. I just … I just …”
His breaths were there, barely, shallow and struggling. She lifted his head and listened. “Please, don’t die. You can’t.” There was no one around, no one to help and he was slipping. How could she have been so reckless? There was no choice. She couldn’t let Carter die. Knowing full well the risk that she would take in preventing his death, she laid him flat on the ground. On her knees, next to his body she began the chant, one learned a long time ago, one that would drain her, but she would survive, and she couldn’t let him die. Milíste sti zoí, ypochoríste apó to thánato. Epistrépste sto fos, antikroúste ti nýchta. She repeated the words again and again until she could feel the life returning to his body.
Carter opened his eyes. The center of his chest stung as his lungs filled with air, but the sensation was not long lasting. What the hell happened? he thought to himself. The familiar odor of sweat infused wood and the worn leather of boxing bags registered with him; the gym, they’d gone to the gym. He remembered what happened. The sparring, the excitement, the look in her eyes as she finally let herself go. He had gotten through to her, and she let her guard down. Yeah, it took trying to kill each other, but it had worked. The action of combat was exactly what she needed, complete abandonment of logic and fear. She’d almost killed him. He lifted his hand to his chest. Hell, he thought she’d succeeded, but the pain continued to subside with each breath.
Movement to lift his head from the ground caused a wave of dizziness, and he paused, waiting for it to pass for fear of fainting. He felt better, but apparently, he wasn’t at 100% quite yet. To steady himself he leaned on his elbow and turned his head just enough to get a view of Asa. She was laying just a few feet away from him. Did he manage to get a shot off?
“Okay, I didn’t mean for us to literally try to kill one another, or to come so close to succeeding.” He chuckled as he started to shift from the floor. “How bad did I get you? I don’t even remember getting a shot off.” Sitting upright, he rested his elbows on his knees. A wave of motion sickness passed slowly as he waited for her response, but it didn’t come. “Asa?”
Asa’s body remained motionless, unresponsive to the sound of her name echoing through the gym. He shook off the remaining effects of his vertigo and made it over to her. “Asa?” He lifted her head and examined her. She was okay, breathing steady, but for whatever reason, she was completely out of it. “What the hell happened? What did you do?”
