XMAS IN JULY ROMANCES

We Wish You A Ferret Christmas, Scrooge You!, and It’s Always Something

by Nikki Lynn Barrett

Genre: Holiday Romances

WE WISH YOU A FERRET CHRISTMAS

One lost and found ferret may bring two broken families together this Christmas.

Widower Lance Rossiter is struggling this holiday season. His young daughter is recovering after an accident. The first thing she asks for when she’s able to talk again is her lost pet’s whereabouts- the very same one Lance blames for the accident…

Cara McLean is still dealing with her feelings about her son’s recent diagnosis. The widowed mother of two very different kids feels like she’s coming apart at the seams. When her son attaches himself to a stray ferret, the situation brings her closer to Lance and his daughter.

The pair quickly learn they have a lot in common and form a deep emotional bond, but neither can let go of the insecurities from their past. They’re forced to reevaluate the things that haunt them before the shot of a future together is shattered.

Lance enjoyed the ‘Watching Cara’ game. Actually, her habits and gestures were hard to peg. So she could get him correctly. Was it the way he tucked in his shirts? The slacks? He debated on asking her what gave it away and how she guessed him to be organized.

The one thing he noticed about her was she always looked around nervously, very aware of her surroundings and the people. “You’re either a people watcher, or you’re nervous about something.” He blurted.

Cara stopped picking at the tomato slice hanging from her sandwich and narrowed her eyes. “Is this you trying to peg me?”

“A little. I notice this because I’m trying to peg you.” He smiled, hoping to lighten the mood.

“I’m a little of both. I watch people for their reactions, and I am nervous for several reasons.” Her cheeks reddened. Lance loved the way he easily made her blush, not that he meant to do it.

“Reactions? To what?”

A heavy silence fell over the table. Cara scanned the deli before facing him again. “Force of habit. I guess even when he’s not around, I watch the people around me because of how Alex is at times. I’ve had several rude comments about his behaviors. Until you pointed it out, I never realized how much I do this.” Setting her food down, Cara sat up straight. “Now I feel all weird.”

“Wasn’t meant to make you feel weird. I’m sorry if that’s what happened. I was just trying to find quirks about you.”

SCROOGE YOU!

After a nasty public break up, actor Kevin Wright returns to his small Nevada hometown for his baby sister’s wedding. Dubbed as “Scrooge” by his ex girlfriend’s slander, Kevin’s life and career are on the verge of being destroyed. He’d give anything not to have to tell the truth of what really happened, but staying silent may not be the answer.

Sasha Moretti has big dreams, but is weighed down by the lack of funds to get her ailing father into a facility that can provide twenty-four hour care. He’s all she has, but he isn’t getting any better. Taking care of him at home is proving to be harder with each passing day. After several run ins with Kevin, the boy she loathed in high school, an opportunity arrives that Sasha finds hard to turn down…

Between the holidays and a wedding, there’s a little madness and magic in the air. Romantic feelings develop between Kevin and Sasha, but when the truth is spoken, can they both get past their demons and let a little love in their hearts?

Kevin left her completely flabbergasted. He was so…Kevin! Sarcastic, sexy, sweet, lovable, and so much more. The fact that he was honest and sincere tugged on her heart. She had him figured out all wrong back then. Becoming an actor hadn’t changed him, either.

People were staring. Big time. Some whispered to each other, and some pointed. One woman even started walking toward them, then changed her mind.

“I think you’re being noticed today,” Sasha whispered to Kevin.

“Or maybe it’s you. It’s not often I have a gorgeous girl on my arm.” He winked and kissed her cheek. He was being very touchy feely today. Sasha would almost think it was for show, but Kevin did it privately as well.

They fit. The two meshed so well. Two misfits in a world of confusion and change. Her future was uncertain, while Kevin’s only went up as time went on. Could they make something work? Sasha’s feelings for him grew stronger, especially with his genuine concern over her life.

“What do you think of this one?” He pointed to a tree which barely had any limbs on the bottom. It was tiny, maybe about four feet. The tree reminded her of herself, someone who never bloomed.

“Are you messing with me again?” Sasha asked.

“This tree needs a home. Look at it. He’s lonely. The droopy limbs here? It’s because the tree is hunched over in sadness. No one wants to take it home.” Kevin actually ran his hand along one of the limbs in a petting motion.

This man was damn convincing. Kevin’s words tore at her, making her care about the stupid tree as if it were alive. Well, trees did live, but… Damn him. She was a sap!

“I see it in your eyes. You’re contemplating.” Kevin moved behind the tree. “Take me home, Sasha. Love me! Love me!” Then he gently shook the longest limbs, trying to reach out for her. “Hug me! Decorate me!”

“Oh my God! Stop! We’ll take it!” She laughed, clutching her stomach.

Kevin peered from behind the tree, flashing that gorgeous smile again. “Aren’t I a stinker?”

“Yes!” She hugged him. “A kind hearted, annoying, and funny one!”

“I’m glad you said kind hearted first.” He tousled her hair, holding her close. “Now let’s go take our new tree home and spiffy it up.”

IT’S ALWAYS SOMETHING

This isn’t your every day sweet holiday story. Between mishaps, crazy work schedules, and giving back to others, this wild ride is full of the unexpected.

Christmas. The magical time of the year where you spend it with your family. Go out and do a little holiday shopping. Spread the Christmas cheer. Cherish the memories and your loved ones.

But when you’re famous celebrity couple Tucker and Quinn McGinnis, things don’t always go as planned. This year, they want more than ever to spend their first holiday together, but their celebrity status has them pulled in a thousand different directions.

When marriages are crumbling all around them, how does this newlywed couple manage to keep things going when it’s always something keeping them apart?

Tucker covered her hand with his. “A few weeks left. We just have a few weeks, and we can go home.” Home to a house full of memories. Full of love. Memories of bringing Quinn there the first few times consumed him. How in awe she’d been over his awards. The guitar lessons which started their friendship in the first place, until Piper needed guardians and he’d gotten ahead of himself and blurted that they were getting married.

No regrets. He had absolutely no regrets letting this woman in his life.

“Love is enough, right Tuck?” Quinn’s voice came out in a low, fearful whisper.

“What do you mean?”

She slapped a hand to her head. “Listen to me, I sound like an idiot. You know what happens when I’m left alone to my thoughts. It’s not easy being a celebrity couple. After hearing about all these break ups, it makes me wonder. Is love enough? Can a couple survive on it?”

“Aww, darlin’. Is this because we’re seein’ each other on weekends right now? I can’t speak for other couples, but love is more than enough. You’re it for me, Quinn. You’re what keeps me goin’. I get dang lonely when I’m not holding you close to me at night, but I go through what I need to because I know I have your love and support. Whether it be five days or five weeks, when I know I get to see your smiling face, it means everything.”

Hearing her doubts, Tucker knew he needed to find a way to get the two of them some quiet time. Away from the responsibility of life, careers, and things they’d committed to. Was she feeling this lonely and worried all week? For Quinn to express her vulnerability this way after they’d been so strong together, he had concerns.

No matter where she goes, USA Today Bestselling author Nikki Lynn Barrett hears voices in her head. Instead of calling her crazy and locking her up, her family realizes it’s just a product of being an author and allows her to write the stories so that the voices shut up.

But they don’t. And probably never will. There’s no need to lock her up, Nikki knows she’ll never escape the voices, not until each and every last story is written. And for every story she writes, about ten or more ideas pop up.

When she isn’t slaving away at her computer writing books that will probably make you cry and keep you in suspense, Nikki plots to take over the world one book at a time. What? It’s a sickness. One she can’t escape!

Books aren’t her only addiction, though. Nikki can be found making up parodies to drive her son crazy, and bantering back and forth with her husband, who somehow manages to steal her away from the fictional world she lives in all the time.

Nikki lives in Arizona with her husband and son, where she can be found using every creativity outlet she can find through music, photography, handcrafted things, and random interests that she may pick up from time to time.

The Portal Prophecies – C.A. King

13816762_10209758983914383_151133844_nBLURB

The main protagonist, Willow, is a teenage girl growing up on her own in a magical world where the events of the past are a mystery. A series of events set her and her friends on a journey like no other, leading them to a new understanding of themselves, their feelings and their abilities. As they begin to unravel all that previously transpired, they find themselves the sole opposition to a plot that could destroy all existence. The one clue they have is a book filled with hundreds of predictions called ‘The Portal Prophecies’. Deciphering them however, will not be an easy task. Written by someone from their past, the pages are lined with riddle like poems. Even worse they appear to be in no particular order.

Each book is based on a different prophecy leading our heroes and heroines to new places and new friends while experiencing growing pains along the way. The entire series, delves deep into the understanding of magic and self-discovery, all the while questioning the right versus wrong equation on personal levels.

As the books progress, readers will find some new explanations for old tales, myths, legends, folk lore and unusual phenomena that could just make them question the validity of stories we all have grown up with. Vampires, Witches, Ghosts, Monsters, Santa Claus, Atlantis, Elves, Dragons, Faeries, find out the alternate truth to them all.

BOOK ONE

Everything was happening so quickly. One minute Willow was talking to her friend Ashlyn and now here she was standing in a lavish room face to face with the boy from the forest. His piercing blue eyes were staring straight into hers, as if seeing her soul.

“Hello,” he said with a smile. “I was wondering if we would ever meet again. Tell me how did you escape the necrid fire?”

“How … how did you get into my dream? What happened to my friend?” Willow barked.

“How?” he laughed. “You called me here. Actually, seems a little unfair you know my name and I don’t know yours.”

Willow realized earlier she had thought of him for a brief moment. “Lance … your name. I was thinking of the forest and what happened. That was enough to call you here?”

“Yes, but how exactly do you know my name?” Lance moved to the back of a chair and rested against it waiting for a reply.

“I heard someone call you in the forest when I was running away,” she said.

“So, back to the beginning, You know my name, but what is yours?” he said.

“Why did you do it? Why did you destroy my home?” Willow asked ignoring the prince’s question.

“That is a long story. Why don’t you tell me how you escaped?” he asked getting a bit aggravated.

That seemed to be an ongoing theme for her with boys, she aggravated them. Willow’s mind turned to a similar conversation she had with Mike. She decided after remembering the duct tape that she needed to come up with an answer for the prince.

“I … don’t know,” she answered with a sigh. “I know I was in an accident and a doctor sedated me so I could rest. If you had let my friend stay longer she might have told me more.” She wasn’t really lying about that, so even if he had the ability to sense an untruth he wouldn’t question what she had just said. She wasn’t about to give him more information than she needed to. He may be cute but she wasn’t stupid.

FROM THE AUTHOR

There has been a lot of talk about mental health issues lately. I myself have been diagnosed with clinical depression. It takes up a lot of my life. Reading and writing are the only things I have found that help (in connection with regular medication), even if only for a short time. To escape to a different world can make a big difference in my mood in real life. To put things in perspective, when I was at my lowest point, I couldn’t open mail, talk on the phone or even drive to the store. Walls of sadness surrounded me. As they closed in, tears would fall, There didn’t need to be a reason or trigger.

People ask me why I started writing. My answer is simple: I wanted to create a world other people could escape to. I wanted to share the place that helped me for many years.

I read books as well as write them. I visit the worlds many different authors have created. It makes me feel better and gives me strength to face real life again. I want to thank everyone who writes. I want them to know they are making a difference.

I have always said that as long as one person finds a little bit of happiness out of my books, I am, in my opinion, an accomplished author. The same is true for every writer out there. Please don’t ever let anyone tell you different.

I’m not a poet, but I’d like to share one that I wrote after my husband’s death.

On this day your light faded away
I brought you back in hopes you’d stay
In selfish dreams I needed you there
My whole world required your care
By the time I realized it was too late
You would now suffer to a new date
I didn’t worry about how you felt
My mind clouded with the bad hand I’d been dealt
To comfort me you tried to return
I can only imagine the painful sting and burn
Once again you put your needs on hold
You always had a heart of gold
If I could go back to that very night
I’d let your soul fly peacefully into the light
I am sorry I wasn’t stronger
I only wished you’d lived a little longer.

Hope you have a great day. Keep writing and I’ll keep reading.

EXCERPT☟
“Mom, do you want to take a ride with me to get a replacement phone before it starts to get too bad out there? I dropped mine in the lecture hall, and it got trampled.” I pulled it from my pocket and shook it back and forth in my hand to show her.
“Sure, but we’ll have to go right now.”
“Okay. Just let me bring this stuff upstairs and use the bathroom.” I gave her a quick kiss on the cheek, and ran up to my room with my bags.
When I got back downstairs Trent told me Mom was in the car waiting for me. As I approached the car, the only thing I could see was the red hat in the window.
“Mother effer,” I shouted. As I got closer I could see his big-toothed, aggravating smile, and my mom was laughing too.
“Eighty-Six.” I opened the door and whined while I tugged unsuccessfully on his jacket. The big fathead didn’t even budge.
I let out a frustrated ‘errrrrrggggggg’ and slammed the door while my mom and Eighty-Six had a good laugh at my expense.
“Oh, London, be courteous. He wouldn’t be very comfortable back there. It’s not roomy like Trent’s truck,” she said in Pratt’s defense.
“Oh my God, what is wrong with you people? You call yourself family? Bunch of traitors.” I plopped in the back seat, and slammed my own door to make my point.
“Oh damn, I forgot my wallet. I’ll be right back,” Mom said, halfway out of the car already.
While she was gone, we sat in silence. I liked it that way. I was still aggravated at that massive melon-head in the front seat.
Next thing I saw was Tuna bolting out the front door and running straight for the woods. I jumped out to grab him before he got too far off looking for my brother or dad. When I bent over to pet him, I heard a whistle from behind me.
“Dear sweet Jesus on a Huffy, London. I like those jeans on you,” Pratt said.
“Way to woo a woman, Eighty-Six,” I responded.
“You know what else I like on you, London?” he asked with slightly puckered lips and a head nod.
“Really? Let me guess…‘You’. That’s what else you like on me,” I scoffed.
“Woooahhh, slow down tiger, I’m not that kind of guy. I was going to say I like all that sass you got on you, but hey, if you wanna go there, I’ll give it a try. Just be gentle.” He gave me a doe-eyed stare and batted his eyelashes.
I couldn’t help but laugh. “You are such an idiot.”
I sent Tuna back in the house and my mom held the door open for him, then we both got back in the car, ready to go.
“Wait. Stop,” Pratt said.
“What now?” I asked, annoyed.
“Does anyone need to use the potty before we leave?” he asked.
“I can’t. Just stop talking. You’re like this weird man-child.” I pulled my iPod out and put my ear buds in, with a cheeky smile on my face.
He just turned around and gave me that irritating grin. But this time, I noticed he had a dimple on one side, and his eyes were gray like the sky. They contrasted with his black shaggy hair that had a bit of a curl at the ends.

Western Romance – Canadian Style

I have a very special lady with me today – Brenda Sinclair.

Brenda, along with Caroline Clemmons and Margaret Tanner was one of the first authors to reach out and encourage me when I first began writing. Her friendship is valued and hopefully one day I will meet this amazing author and lady in person.

DSC_5990

Thank you for having me join you today. I’m delighted to share some of my musings about my historical western romance stories in the Spirit Creek Series.

Did you have all of the plots roughed out for all six books, or at least, thought about in advance? Or do you plot each book one at a time as you go?

The title, No More, has never changed since the first draft over ten years ago, but CoverFinalLG-NoMorethe plotline evolved over time and several scenes were cut. Of course being of the opinion that this ‘brilliant writing’ *wink, wink* couldn’t be lost forever, I toyed with the idea of writing a trilogy. And some of the rejected scenes worked in book two. Then the trilogy morphed into a six book series when plotline ideas wouldn’t stop popping into my head! I suppose that’s a good thing. I prepare a detailed plot summary (yes, I’m a plotter) of each book before I start writing. And I write down ideas for scenes as they occur to me, but plotline changes are constantly evolving even as I write.

How do you keep all your recurring characters straight?

That is no small feat when you’re keeping track of an entire town’s population! Mind you, several recurring characters appear in every book. But new citizens have arrived and a few births and deaths have occurred. A huge poster board occupies an office wall with color-coded Post-its covering every square inch. Blue means a deceased citizen, yellow is for children and pink is adults currently alive. I love writing about so many unique citizens, and I’ve had reviewers mention they enjoyed having the characters from an earlier story appear again in future books.

What can you tell us about the books in your Spirit Creek Series?

How often have we heard the old saying Variety is the spice of life? Too frequently to count, right? We all enjoy variety in our leisure activities, in our hobbies, in the movies we watch and, of course, in the books we read. When I plotted the Spirit Creek Series, I kept this concept of ‘variety’ in mind.

CoverFinalLG-NoMore

Book One, No More, finds a recent widow and a wealthy rancher involved in a marriage of convenience to provide their children with two parents. Of course, their secret feelings for each other get in the way, along with a number of other problems facing their blended family.

index 3

Book Two, No Time, was written for readers who enjoy lots of plot twists with their romance. Ellie Thomas is a schoolmarm who considers the town’s lawyer a friend who stands by her when she needs help. But Robert has loved her from afar for years, and he hopes to win her heart.

index

Book Three, No Chance, was written for readers who enjoy a few steamy scenes in a romance story, so beware if you’re not a fan of a ‘hot’ read. Chance Maxwell and Sadie Peterman heat up the pages and each other while Sadie learns a few harsh life lessons.

index 2

Book Four, No Ties, is another sweet romance between Sheriff Ernest Jones and schoolteacher, Ivy Paterson who told a little white lie years ago, shortly after arriving in Spirit Creek. When she recognizes a stranger in town, she realizes her fibs are coming back to bite her in the bustle.

CoverFinalLG-NoWay

Book Five, No Way, is my latest release. This story involves a troubled widow who arrives in Spirit Creek by mistake. Ada Perkins is keeping secrets and hoping to escape a troubled past while starting a new life. When someone from her past arrives in town, she could pay for her secrets with her life?

Book Six, No Hope, featuring an abducted schoolteacher who was a minor character in No Chance and a widowed rancher, will be released in autumn 2015. Can you guess who the heroine will be?

index 4The Christmas novella, No Peace, ties up one lose end from No Ties. With Blake Connor’s life in chaos, he is torn between proposing to the love of his life, Gertie the hotel waitress, and just leaving town to keep her safe.

All of the books in the Spirit Creek Series, print and/or ebook versions, are available on

Thank you so much for letting me join you today! I hope the readers enjoy reading my series as much as I’ve enjoyed writing it. Happy reading, everyone!

A kickoff of new holiday romances by Shanna Hatfield

and a fundraiser for the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund

An Interview with the Men of Hardman Holidays

Three characters from Shanna Hatfield’s historical holiday series, Hardman Holidays join us today. Set in the western town of Hardman, Oregon, this series of sweet romances highlights determined women and the men who fall for them. Luke Granger, Blake Stratton, and Arlan Guthry talk about life in Hardman in the 1890s.

A warm welcome to you all. Tell us a little about how you met.

Luke: We all grew up in Hardman. Blake moved here with his parents from England just after my family arrived from New York when we were quite small. Arlan, your parents moved here before you were born, didn’t they? I was young enough I don’t remember.

Arlan: Yes, they did. My brother, Adam, was just a year old when they moved to Hardman. I was born two years later. Blake’s mother was a friend of my mother’s.

Blake: That’s right. When Mum and Dad returned to England, she mentioned how much she missed visiting with your mother, although she didn’t say the same about Luke’s.

Luke: (Grins) Dora Granger just takes a little getting used to. Besides, she’s completely changed for the better since I married Filly.

Blake: Rather like you, ol’ chum.

What type of work do you do?

Luke: I own the Hardman Bank and manage it with Arlan’s capable assistance. I also raise cattle, hold an interest in a lumber mill, and a partnership in a mine.

Blake: He doesn’t want to get bored. (Blake and Arlan chuckle). While Luke is running hither and yon to meetings and the like, I stay home and carve furniture or work with my horses.

Luke: The Viscount should mention his furniture is in high demand both in England and America under the Roxbury House name. He also breeds and trains some of the best horses in this part of the country.

Arlan: His stallion, Romeo, is quite an impressive beast.

Blake: Romeo’s feelings would be hurt to hear you refer to him as a beast.

Arlan: If the name fits… As Luke mentioned, I work at the bank as his assistant. When I’m not there, I play the trumpet in the community band, and participate in activities around town.

Luke: And I thought he just had a thing for the phantasmagorical wonders of the new magician who rolled into town.

(Arlan frowns at Luke while Blake laughs)

Arlan: You just like to say the word “phantasmagorical” and work it into nearly every conversation since Alex came to town. She is a very talented magician.

Blake: And very beautiful.

Luke: And single. Don’t forget she is as free and unfettered as they come, should anyone be interested in courting her.

(Arlan glares at Blake and Luke)

Use  five words to describe the most wonderful thing in your life

Luke: Filly – my wife, my love.

Blake: Beautiful Ginny – wife, friend, lover.

Arlan: That’s a tough one. Maybe you can come back to me on that.

Luke: (Slaps Arlan on the back) It’s just us. Go on, Arlan, fess up.

Arlan: (Frowning at Luke while fidgeting with his pocket watch.) Look at the time, we really must be going.

Before you leave, tell us what’s the best part of Christmas in Hardman?

Arlan: The sounds of carols, the crunch of snow beneath my boots, and the decorations. There is a feeling of kinship and welcome all around town.

Blake: (Snorts and shakes his head) Don’t forget the food, Arlan. You’re about to neglect a very important part of the holidays.

Luke: Like Filly’s cakes, tarts, and candies. There are the sweet breads and rolls, jams and pies, and the best cookies.

Blake: (Glances at Luke) Did she make those chocolate meringue things again?

Arlan: I had the rash idea Filly and Ginny were the best part of the holiday season for you two. It will be my pleasure to let them know you much prefer cookies and bread to their love and devotion. (Smirks at his friends)

Thank you for joining us. Any parting words for our readers?

Luke: Thank you for hosting us today. If you enjoy sweet holiday romances set in the past, I hope you’ll consider reading our stories in The Christmas Bargain, The Christmas Token, and The Christmas Calamity.
