A Marshal for Christmas

 Book 1 in a Brand

New Series

Blurb

A lonely and abused woman without a home. A Marshal who is given the sudden responsibility of two children. A mail-order bride situation that has fallen to ruin. Can Lottie find a home and a family by Christmas?

December 1880
When Lottie Reiner lost her father in the war, her mother fell to pieces.

At the young age of eleven, Lottie began caring for her catatonic mother. But when both her mother and grandfather pass away months apart, Lottie becomes nothing but a burden to her family.

Her grandmother pushes Lottie to get married before it’s too late. But Lottie is a twenty-seven-year-old spinster with no experience raising children.

Isn’t it already too late?

Deputy US Marshal Archer King comes from a family of law keepers.

His father was a US Marshal, and his mother worked as a Pinkerton Agent with Kate Warne.

When his only sister passed on in childbirth, his brother-in-law swore he could care for the children on his own. And Archer was to check in on them, but in almost two years, he’s neglected that duty to his sister.

When the father, Sam Hodge, goes missing, he finds out exactly what kind of dire situation the children have been subject to.

After being turned out of her home, Lottie heads to Durant, Oklahoma, where Sam Hodge and his two children live, in the hopes of becoming a new wife and mother.

Only the mail-order situation does not turn out the way Lottie had hoped, and many of the things that Sam had told her in his letters turn out to be lies.

The only thing true is the children, and Lottie is fast becoming attached to them.

But what will happen when Sam is found?

Will she have the opportunity to get a home and a family before Christmas?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I am a multi award-winning and bestselling Australian author who has been published by traditional publishers since 2003. I love writing contemporary and historical western romance, either with or without suspense elements, and also write romantic suspense. Since August 2017, I have concentrated on writing mostly contemporary western romance series, where characters and settings are interlinked between each series. This means you have familiar characters and places throughout each series. I’ve taught writing for many years, and have written several non-fiction books about writing. I’ve worked as an editor for publishers, coached writers one-on-one, and have appeared at writer’s conferences in Australia and New Zealand. I have also been an invited guest speaker at Sisters in Crime and other relevant author groups. I have been married to my own real-life hero for over 43 years. We have two grown children and six grandchildren. Our household would not be complete without our wonderful pets, which includes two elderly cats and our beautiful dog Bindy, who loves long, leisurely walks. We are also fostering a puppy, who will ultimately go to a child with severe autism. My hobbies are tenpin bowling and paper crafts, and surprisingly, going to the gym. I hope you enjoy reading my books. If so, please consider leaving a review after you’ve finished reading my book/s. She moved forward and peered into the area where he’d stepped. Clambering over his feet and climbing up his shins with tiny paws, whining and crying for attention with miniscule muzzles and teensy mouths, were the cutest little bundles of fur Mel had ever seen. She wasn’t really much of a pet person but she had to resist the urge to squeal at how cute they were, and when Domingo bent and picked two of them up, cuddling them and laughing as they clamored to lick at his chin with pink tongues no bigger than her finger tip, Mel’s heart melted into a big puddle on the floor. He may be brusque with her, but he showed a much gentler side with the puppies.

Life isn’t always sweet, even for girls called Candy.
Candice Parker married Gerald Ford on Christmas Eve two years ago following a massive blizzard. The year before that her family was left homeless when a fire burned their apartments to the ground. Fortunately, fireman Gary had been on call and led the team that rescued Lanelle and Dakota from the blaze.
Last year it all came to a head when Caroline joined their household as the nanny and housekeeper when she revealed the fire had been arson. Following the discovery, a sinister plot unfolded that almost killed them all.
To say Candy is dreading the arrival of this typically happy holiday would be an understatement.
However, she does have one thing going for her this year. Gary has convinced her to adopt rather than try for a baby of their own and a new addition will join their family just in time to change Candy’s view of Christmas forever.
Pushing through her self-doubts, Candy must embrace the desire within her to become Joylana’s mother and champion for life, but will she have the strength to be the mom she wants to be after all the hardships she and Daks have faced in the past?

Anyone who knows me could tell you, I am a friendly kind of person, never met a stranger and take up conversations anywhere at any time. I work hard, and my mind never seems to shut down, as I wake up often in the middle of the night with ideas pouring out and demanding to be dealt with. Of course that means much of my books were written in the middle of the night.
I grew up and still live in the great state of Texas where everything is bigger, where we have warm weather and a central location. I love my state, my town, and my family, which includes my four sons, my significant other, and many friends as well.
I have thoroughly enjoyed writing the books that are currently available and hope you will enjoy reading them just as much. And of course, there will be many more stories to come.

“It’s my mother. She thinks we’re serious. You and me. That I invited you to dinner because we’re in a relationship.”
Lines creased Zoe’s forehead. “Why would she think that?”
Because his mother was a hopeless romantic who wanted her son to get married so she could have grandchildren. “Because I’m bringing you to Thanksgiving dinner.”
“That doesn’t make any sense.”
“My family never makes much sense.”
“Haven’t you ever brought anyone to Thanksgiving dinner before?” Zoe asked.
“Not in a long time.” Sean tried to keep his personal life as private as he could. Not easy living in a small town full of close friends and a large, demanding family who defined the meaning of nosy. “That must be why my mom got the wrong idea.”
“You have to admit it’s kind of sweet.”
“Imagine if it were your mother.”
Zoe winced. “Okay, not sweet at all.”
“My mom’s probably calling my aunts, who will call my cousins…”
“It’s not a problem. Just a little misunderstanding.” Zoe didn’t sound upset. “We can tell everyone the truth when we arrive. Have a good laugh about it.”
He stared at the snow on the side of the road. “Right.”
“You’re not laughing,” she said gently.
“Nope.”
“I don’t have to go.”
“You’re not spending Thanksgiving alone.” Sean wasn’t going to let her get away that easily. He blew out a puff of air. “My mom’s expecting you now. If you didn’t show up, she’d be disappointed. She looks forward to the holidays all year. I don’t want to ruin her day.”
“She’s going to be disappointed anyway when we tell her the truth.”
“Yeah. Unless…” His voice trailed off.
We couldn’t, could we? The idea had merit.
“What?” Zoe asked.
“We could pretend to be dating,” he suggested. “Just for today.”
“That could be fun.”
“Yeah.” And solve his problem. Problems, actually. His mom’s Thanksgiving would be salvaged, his opinionated family couldn’t say anything about him settling down, and he would get to spend time with Zoe. A win-win situation for everyone. “You in?”
She shrugged. “Sure.”
